Cube production still going - Nintendo UK

GCN News | The lunchbox lives on. For now.
Only yesterday, we reported that production of the GameCube had ceased, with Nintendo of America's Perrin Kaplin announcing the family death to Gamedaily. However, there's been another twist in the tale this morning, with Nintendo's UK arm claiming that production of GameCube hardware and software is far from over.

"I can confirm that globally, Nintendo is still continuing production of GameCube hardware and GameCube software," a spokesperson for Nintendo UK told Eurogamer.

It's a stay of execution for the loveable little console then, though its hard to see that lasting too long. More as it breaks.

Makes sense to keep it going, I think Microsoft made a Sega mistake when they cut support from Xbox 1 when they did, it was too early, alot of people got upset when Sega cut support for the Mega Drive, especially when people invested $400 in 32X addons

There's a lot of fat in Wii price position at the moment - So I suppose someone smart could figure a business model for supporting the GC console as a $79.95 lost leader to swell ranks that could later move up to Wii.

Imagine low cost $10 - $20 range of GC media titles (being playable on both GC & Wii) - but with absolutely no canibalisation of higher priced Wii specific titles due to simplified titles & the differing controller functionality right?

Walk into JB HiFi and see a table of budget $15.95 GC/Wii titles that can compete with the "three for $55 PS2" offerings. It hits a consumer target long lost by Nintendo and gets some much needed merchandising capability & brand visibility without sacrificing margin.

This could be a smart offensive mechanism but from experience; Nintendo staff are not bright enough to bring this kind of thing off - certainly not in Australia anyway. I do hear that Ninty UK have some good people though - so lets hope someone figures it out!

I hear ya, I wouldn't say best, Mega Drive is still my fave console ever, but I would not argue that the DC was the most underrated system ever. I am still patiently awaiting the next installment of Shenmue

True, there still a few games coming for Cube, like that exclusive shmup game, with "Wii compatible" on it, I forgot it's name.

For me it was, probably the only console that probably made games fun again. Yeah I hear, I need an ending for it too.

I think it's a great idea to keep it going. Nintendo's getting some huge exposure with the Wii, and you wouldn't be surprised to see casual Xbox-type gamers who didn't own a Gamecube go back and buy one on the cheap after a good Wii experience. For example, people who buy Twilight Princess may want to go back to Wind Waker, and kids who think Nintendo is cool again, but can't afford a Wii, may want to go and get the older console. I mean, for $99, how can you go wrong?

I want an as new Indigo GC for the study so I can sit it next to my SGI O2 (of the same colour) and share the LCD display. Shame it was built with a PPC and not MIPS (like the N64) otherwise I could have encouraged the two to mate. icon_biggrin.gif

This has happened! My uncle owns a Xbox. They came over one day and I showed the Wii. They loved it. A week later he bought a Wii and Zelda (an old fan). I told them about the cube compatibility and so he bought a cube controller and some cube games. He didn't buy the console but he is buying the games.
