However, we can finally put the speculation to rest, as we can confirm that the GameCube version is no longer in development. A Blizzard representative revealed on the official Starcraft and Warcraft website the reason behind the cancellation. “In order to provide the game envisioned by the console team a set and readily available online solution was needed. Unfortunately the GameCube has no online service and since so much work is going in to the online portion, it would be additional work to release only part of the intended game.” Said the Blizzard representative.
Thankfully the Blizzard worker did reassure gamers that all is not glum for the future and the relationship between Blizzard and Nintendo. “The GameCube and Revolution will still be considered for future products, unfortunately Ghost will only be made available on the Xbox and PS2 at this time.”
This comes as rather disappointing news for GameCube fans as it has already been such a long wait; to only be given a slap in the face so close to it’s release.
Starcraft: Ghost will fully utilise the Xbox Live online interface for the Xbox, while the PS2 will use Battle.net. Both versions are currently scheduled for a mid-2006 release.
