Mario Kart Arcade GP to ship in October

GCN News | Now you can powerslide in public.
The boffins at Nintendo and Namco have gotten together over the past year in order to create another arcade game based on a popular Nintendo racer. The result is Mario Kart Arcade GP, and it looks rather excellent. There will be 11 playable characters to choose from, with Mario (obviously), Luigi and so on, as well as new characters like Pac-Man.

The unit will come as a two-seat unit standard, but can be linked up with other units for additional fun. There are twenty four courses of varying difficulty in all - almost a record for an arcade machine - with additional challenge stages. NamCam 2 can also be used in the cabinet pictured in our media panel. It allows you to take a picture of yourself, so that other racers know just exactly which racer you are. Handy.

Naturally, Mario Kart Arcade GP has the same crazy gameplay that the series has become famous for, with coins for additional speed, lightning bolts, stars, shells and a heap of secret moves.

...And here's the but. The machine is only going to be produced in limited quantities, so it's probably fair to say that PAL shores won't see too many of them. Least we can hope, eh? The machine is set for an October release. You can see the cabinet and some screenshots in the media panel.

OK, so I probably will never own one of these, but if I had the spare money, and could convince the family to vacate one of the rooms in the house... I would SO buy one of these!

I remeber when F-Zero AX was out I heard that there were only 2 in Austalia & they both were in the Geroge st Acarde in Sydney. Also it wasn't there for long too. (Damn it had to unlock the AX cup the hard way... icon_mad.gif )

& like you said we can only hope there's more in Aus this time.

I remember there being one in Melbourne (F-Zero AX machine). It was only up for a few weeks though, so I never got the chance to try it out.

Brand new arcade driving units are - I think, don't quote me on this - around $15,000. I think Daytona USA still goes for around $5000.

Not positive, but that figure is sticking in my head for some reason.

Ok, quick google search netted this.

Want an 8 player Daytona cabinet? $50,000. USD.

I'm not even gonna bother getting my hopes up for a machine to hit Canberra. It would be nice but alas, I doubt it will happen. AX never came. icon_sad.gif

If I ever want to play these, I guess I will have to win the lotto. That way I can buy them (and Initial D as well). icon_biggrin.gif

Mario Kart GP is lame. Least from my couple of goes on it. There's one in the local arcade, well local when I'm at Uni. Anyway the game is rubbish, it's just so dull, there doesn't seem to be any powerslide and all the new weapons are mostly rubbish, plus the chance of getting an old school weapon like lightning seems impossible currently. Don't even know if it's in there. So this screws up balance. I played it with some of my friends and they all thought it was lame as well.

F-Zero AX is really annoying me, I keep forgetting to bring my memory card when I go play it (the only one I know of near me is in London, so I don't really have the chance to play it that often). Also I think it doesn't except memory card 251s, where my F-Zero file is currently stuck, although the last time I tried to play it my memory card was full. So it was probably just that.
