First details emerge for next Viewtiful Joe game

GCN News | Not what we expected, but still sounding Viewtiful.
Clover Studio, the clever chaps behind the first two Viewtiful Joe games that appeared on the Gamecube and PS2 respectively, have been talking up the third game in the series. Entitled Viewtiful Joe: Battle Carnival, the game is in development for Gamecube and PSP, and is set to surprise a few people with a 'radical new direction'.

That's not just press release talk either, as the game is leaving it's side-scrolling, platform roots behind, and is to be converted into a fighting game, a lá Super Smash Bros. Melee. Crazy stuff, but we fancy it might actually work rather well.

Naturally, the game's multiplayer should provide the core appeal of the title, with Clover already confirming that a four player 'Party Battle Mode' will be available. A range of Viewtiful Joe characters are going to be selectable from the start, with Joe himself, Silvia, Captain Blue, Captain Blue Jr., Blade Master Alastor, Dark Emperor Jet Black and Co-ordinator Sprocket all confirmed. And knowing Capcom, there should be the odd unlockable or ten. Dante, perhaps?

During these matches players will be able to pick up 'VFX Orbs', power-ups that allow you to perform powerful VFX moves by pressing L or R. Multiple types of orb are promised, which is nice.

What isn't so nice is that we haven't yet got a PAL release date, though we do know the game will be appearing in Japan on September 29th, meaning the first screens shouldn't be too far away. We'll keep you posted.

hmmm... while i think it's good they are diversifying, i'm kinda skeptical as to how this will be...

They're really going to have to change the formula for this to work in multiplayer. Of the three VFX powers, only Mach Speed would seem to work. Zoom would be pretty hard to implement, and Slow is pretty much an impossiblitly. I think Clover has proven itself as a AAA developer (Okami looks sweeeeet), so I'd think the game is in pretty good hands.

I've only played the first one, I don't know what was introduced in the sequel.
