Fancy a Gamecube for under forty quid?

GCN News | For UK gamers, there can be no more excuses not to own Nintendo's platform.
Sing it from the rooftops: for the price of a new game, UK gamers can now own a Gamecube console (black or purple), thanks to catalogue retailer Index. Yes, Index high street stores are now selling the Gamecube for a (beyond paltry) £39.99. That's more or less exactly €60 or AU$104. Urk.

This isn't necessarily all fluffy, happy rainbow news though - last year, a number of British retailers (most notably Dixons, the largest home electronics supplier in the UK) dropped the price of the GameCube dramatically in an effort to clear stocks of the console before dropping it from their ranges. After sales picked up again at the new price-point however, many retailers had a change of heart and continued selling Nintendo's machine.

As for Nintendo themselves, they today reassured gamers that this wasn't the beginning of the end for their console on UK shelves. "Index is currently running a big promotion on all its products, of which GameCube is one, offering up to 50 per cent discount," the company said in a press release, managing to state the obvious with extraordinary precision. "As far as we are aware, Index will continue to trade with Nintendo at certain times of the year."

Good price though and I hope it increases sales for Nintendo.

Look's like Index's whole stock of Gamecubes has run dry. Unless local stores still have them, Index won't have any in stock until after the promotion ends.

It's not all that suprising though, a few months back I bought a GBA SP for £30 in GAME's deal of the day.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of in my whole entire life. Now it's just plain obvious they're desperate.

Or they know good marketing.

Where's the good in making a console the price of a game? I doubt anyone thought that the £79.99 price slash was too high, how many do they expect to sell over time?

I think you're reading too much into it.

The Gamecube offer is part of a wider-reaching sale by Index and not a Nintendo endorsed Price drop.

Oops, sorry, for some reason I got that impression just for that post.

"Unfortunatly, due to age restrictions, we cannot show you Big Pete's Blood Splattered Body, people are looking for this person (Pictured Above) so they can give him a public service award" icon_razz.gif

If this is part of a sale by only one of the high-street retailers, then the others might follow suit.

What the hell for Quinsisdos was the guy who brought this thing up. I said THE END but he kept on going.

Also how much does an X Box and PS2 cost in the UK?

I brought it up for the delight of Cerebral, who is quite clearly a PSO fan, I wasn't expecting your reaction, as you say many a time, its just a joke, and the replies wern't exactly called for.

The price of a PS2/X-Box depends on where you buy it from and if you get it new or second hand. I think my PS2 was around £130 (AUS $340) new, but I maybe totally wrong, as for Xbox, ask GT2.

I got my Xbox and 4 games (+ Neo S controller) for £140, and that was last Christmas.
