New Street fighter 4 info

PALGN News | It's 3D.
A picture has been floating around the Internet for the last half a day, of Capcom's upcoming Street Fighter IV - as unveiled by 1up as a promotion for a feature on the game in their tree-destroying sister venture, EGM magazine. The big news is that the game will be rendered in 3D, but allegedly play on a 2D plane, much like the Arika developed Street Fighter EX series. It was also confirmed that Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Dhalsim from Street Fighter II will be returning, and that the six button control scheme remains.

While still a rumour at the moment, weblog Destructoid has managed to get hold of two more images (follow the link for the watermarked screens), as well as some info by way of Brazillian blog Blogeek.

From the info there, they have determined that the game will not look like the stylised teaser trailer released earlier this year (as the screens confirm). It will apparently run at 60 frames per second and feature online play, the latter implying a console release rather then appearing in the arcade first like all Street Fighter games before it. The game will not take place after the Street Fighter III series, but will instead be more of a direct follow-up to Street Fighter II. As a result, there will be many old-school characters returning, but it's unlikely any Street Fighter III characters will appear. And craziest of all, joke character Shen Long may appear.

Probably most worrying is the claim that the parry system from Street Fighter III has been completely removed, and has been replaced by a gauge based cancel system called 'Saving' or 'Revenge'. Supers will return, along with new 'ultra' moves, which appear to be Killer Instinct-like canned combos.

There is still no word on who precisely is developing the game, other than the production being funded by Capcom USA and in development by 'a Japanese team'.

Disappointing, but not particularly suprising. Unfortunately for purists, even Viewtiful Joe-style 2.5D plays quite differently to sprite-based 2D...

The fact that they're billing it as a followup to SF2 rather than 3 is worrysome - it suggests that they're thinking in terms of mass market appeal rather than depth.

Looking on the bright side, though, it couldn't possibly be worse news than Guilty Gear 2. icon_lol.gif

Shen Long may appear in the game. We are NOT kidding.
Maybe we should just buy them a pet shark (and maybe attach some frikkin' laser beams?) in a big tank with a ramp next to it, so they can repeatedly practice jumping over it on a jet-ski or something? icon_surprised.gif

Hmm at least it's not 3D. Though I won't make a decision on the 2.5D until we say actual gameplay.

Not a fan on the new look, but I won't judge until I have something more tangible than a picture to look at. The biggest disappointment for me is the announcement for the old school characters - at least replace Chun-Li with somebody decent. icon_confused.gif

Hopefully some better SFII characters also make the cut.

I really don't like the style and look of those screens. Ryu looks like an angry kind of fat man and I hate their gloves. It better not have insane combos like Killer Instinct. I liked SF3 because it had natural flowing combos and my pet hate in fighting games is long winded button based combos. It takes so much away from the essence of a fighter.

*sigh* stupid Capcom.

Sounds interesting.
I don't mind new game modes, players and fighting system mechanics but they better not recycle a lot of old characters from older series into this.

SF3 3rd Strike was great because the only returning chracters were Ken, Ryu, Akuma (Clones characters) and Chun Li.

Adding Dalsim? Why? 3d strike was great because of the heap of new players and such. I hope they dont recycle backgrounds and music or too many players though. I am still excited but i dont want it to be a rehash fest with new graphics.

And on this style, SNK playmore was gonna do the same thing for the Next KOF XII!! But it seems like SNK were slow again to show off
this 2d-3D style before capcom. When it probably comes out, SNK will probably be accused for copying the style...

I doubt the screen shots are real, or at least it won't look the same when the actual game is released. The polygon on the character is too low for a new game imo.

Capcom really has dropped the ball on this one and isn't listening to the fans imo. If any game that could bring 2d back to the mainstream of gaming, it is Street Fighter. They had a great chance here to fully utilize the power of next generation systems to create an incredible experience but they decided to go with polygons over sprites, which anyone who has played their share of fighters changes the entire feel and style of the gameplay.

I just don't see it playing like Street Fighter should

Going from 2D to 3D is probably a cost issue. Making a high def, 60fps, sprite based game would take a heck of a lot more time and manpower than a 3D game, without any addition to the financial return. HEck, check out how long SFII HD is taking, and they don't even have that many frames.

Ah Shen Long, I used to own the EGM magazine that the Shen Long April Fool's joke appeared in. So many people got taken by that joke icon_lol.gif

The online gameplay sounds good, but hopefully it's not crap like the SFII online system for the Xbox Live title icon_rolleyes.gif

I have to say I quite like the 'arty' style that the game has gone with but what the hell has happened to the structures of the characters? Ryu looks like has some sort of face abnormality. icon_confused.gif

Goddamn people, developers we still appreciate sprites...listen oh well I'll probably get it regardless.

I hate it, the fact most companies refuse to make big budget 2D games icon_sad.gif

After viewing those screenshots and if the 3D is smooththly done then 2d sprites can pretty much be made redundant IMO.

So let me get this straight

It's going to be rendered like the EX series?
It's going to have a Killer Instinct type insane combo system?
Getting rid of the stuff (i.e. parry system) that made 3rd Strike the best fighting game ever?

I had such high hopes that they were going to build and improve on the system that even to this day works so perfectly.

Sounds like Super Street Fighter II HD Remix is going to be cool though. Please Capcom, do the same for 3rd Strike icon_biggrin.gif

No thanks, I don't want nasty Udon generic anime touching the already perfect SF3 art.

Incredibly doubtful anyway, so many frames in SF3 I doubt Capcom could ever be bothered. Makato has a 50 frame waling animation, and Elena a 70 frame STANDING animation.

^ While SF3 is the BEST game in the series, I didn't really like many of new characters, art direction or even the sound for the matter. I prefer the gritty look of Street Fighter 2 (the update for SSFIIHDR (HA!) looks to be a bit plain and bland IMO at this stage).

Ah well, we will see how this all plays out. If they get a bigger enough backlash from the community I'm sure they will readjust the development accordingly.

I don't like most of SFIII's character list as well. It has the best fighting system no doubt, but I wanted the classic characters as well, hopefully IV puts that all in.

OK so to doing up the art may not be necessary, but 3rd Strike online is a brilliant idea.

Horses for courses, art, sound IMO were way better IMO and I learned to deal with getting rid of the old fighters. Out of the ones that didn't make it to 3rd strike I only really used Dhalsim. But my main character of choice did change to Akuma.

So the character list didn't really affect me that much at all. It was good to actually face against new characters (except Gill, I hated his "resurrection" ability) but the new challengers gave it a really fresh feel.
