Director Mike Newell discusses Prince of Persia flick

PALGN News | Not a video game movie, but a great story. Like there's a difference...
Mike Newell, who was recently announced to be helming the silver screen adaptation of the popular Prince of Persia series has divulged details about the upcoming flick. You may remember Mike Newell as the director of rom-com mega-hit Four Weddings and a Funeral, and more recently, as the man behind Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Newell, who sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to talk about the film, stated "It's not a video game movie, it's a great story. If you had read the script, you would know that it wasn't a video game. It's very exciting and it's immensely romantic and it's like Lost Horizon. It takes you to somewhere you've never been."

The film will be based predominantly on the Sands of Time iteration of the Prince of Persia series, and has been scripted by game creator Jordan Mechner and Jeffrey Nachmanoff (who was responsible for the script for global warming apocalyptic thriller, The Day After Tomorrow). Despite the recent Hollywood writer's strike, the film has recently gone into production. Newell seemed excited to be working on the film, saying, "I'm full of ... ideas. It'll be terrific."

Newell did, however, leave one cryptic hint for those interested in the plot of the film. "You know what Stonehenge is? Stonehenge is a machine that tells you that the world will survive because every year the sun comes up in exactly the same place." Make of that what you will, dear reader.

I've been waiting for this movie, PoP was such a great series, even though I didn't like HP4 that much lol this should still be good..

i think Prince of Persia has more potential than a lot of the games that have ultimately made it to film, but whether that potential remains unblemished by unnecessary embellishments (the RE Nemesis) or complete plot changes (Doom) remains to be seen.

Well I read a script review and the names of the characters have been changed but whether that was a first draft and the names have been restored I'm not sure.

It sounded a bit complicated to me while I was reading the review and the information it divulged. It does indeed concern the Dagger and the Sands of Time but how the Dagger would be implemented in the film I have no idea at this time.

I hope this guy can deliver a great movie anyway. I'm not a fan of Harry Potter so for me I'll be judging his directorial skills on this film. It's good that his approach is to not treat it like a video game, which is what I think needs to be done in adapting games. This doesn't mean to ignore the rules and the source material, but to get out of the mindset of "this is based on a video game, let's just have fun with it and not take it too seriously".

Parkour will be a huge part of the film which is something I'm very excited about. It was something I and other fans I've read about would often recommend when posting things about this project. It's good to see they have listened to the fans on this. If you treat the fans with respect and target the film to them then non-fans/non-gamers will become fans because you've made a great adaptation.

Making game to film adaptations with the non-fans/non-gamers in mind first is not the way to go. I hope this is something that is part of the filmmaker's approach on Prince of Persia.
