Latest Australian console sales figures released

PALGN News | Wii overtakes the GameCube's life to date.
Gamespot have gotten their hands on the latest hardware sales figures from sales tracker GfK, and they're pretty much what we've come to expect at this point. During the July-September quarter, the DS remained by far the highest selling platform, the PS2 is still selling extremely well, and the Wii outsold its next-gen rivals handily.

The DS sold 139,483 during the July-September quarter, bringing its total install base to 730,076. Next, the relatively ancient PS2 still managed to sell another 66,228 for the quarter, just ahead of the Wii which sold 61,027, bringing its total to 167,899. Of the other next gen systems, the Xbox 360 sold 40,467 and the PlayStation 3 27,533, bringing their totals to 222,136 and 82,261 respectively.

Probably the most interesting statistic is that the Wii has now overtaken the GameCube's life to date sales. The last reported figure for the GameCube was 162,936, so the Wii has managed to outsell its predecessor in under a year.

Here are the full sales figures for each platform:

THe GameCube was really crap, especially considering the same-gen PS2 still outsells the 'next-gen' competition.

What a reality check - with all the talk and hype that surrounds the current gen systems it's amazing to see that consumers are still buying PS2 in huge numbers. Don't think it's success will ever be matched. 2 million install base is massive - puts things in perspective, the marathon is only in first steps for current-gen.

Actually having PS2 at 110 Million+ compared to around 10 million for Wii and 360 worldwide puts things in perspective. I don't think any of the home consoles will reach those PS2 numbers this generation.

Congrats on Aussies for the Wii outselling the GCN already.

Nintendo has done a complete 180, with the GCN situation, great news for Ninty, and hopefully this leads to a variety of quality software, by the end of the year, there's going to be some of the first real must have Wii games.

Ummm... not really, since the PS2 has been out slightly longer than the other two.

I think he meant that the 360 would have to sell at a much faster rate than it currently is. At the rate that it's sold so far (about 5 million a year?), it'd have to be supported for another 20 years to reach total PS2 sales. That's if Sony EVER stop making the things...

What, Maikii was comparing the total of Austraila's PS2 sales and I was comparing worldwide. Not that hard to figure out, really.

Well, typically the most successful system sells much more as it goes on. Sony only shipped 6.40 million PS2s in it's first nine months (March-December 2000), but 18.6 million 2001, and 25 million in 2002.

And the DS sold about 10 million for it's first year, but is on track to sell a whopping 30+ million this year.

Very interesting, although predictable, numbers.

Does anyone know how many original xboxes were sold in australia over it's lifetime? I wonder if the 360 or even the Wii have taken it over?
