Australian sales charts, week ending 02/09/07

PALGN News | Not much has changed.
The world loves Bioshock, and the Australian public does too, with the 360 version of game finishing at the top of the charts for the second week in a row. The Australian public also loves Singstar, keeping the standalone version of 90s in second place. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training continued its amazing run, jumping to number three. Meanwhile, the newer More Brain Training is nowhere to be seen, even in the DS top ten. The Singstar 90s bundle is at four - probably because Luke won't stop buying the damn thing. Rounding out a repetitive top five is the PC version of Bioshock.

Pokemon Diamond continued with its up/down form, dropping this week to finish at six. Mario Party Wii held steady at eight - seriously, who keeps buying Mario Party games? Stop it now, please. The less attractive Pokemon game, Pearl rose a spot to eight this week - but will forever be left in the shadow of Diamond, apparently. AFL Premiership 2007 re-entered the top ten at nine, while World of Warcraft held firm at ten.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by the beautiful and lovely people at GfK.

Why these charts are becoming useless:

1. Separting bundles from actual games - eg. SingStar 90's could actually be outselling BioShock - We'd never know. Why not include actual estimates so we could figure out for ourself (like is done in Japan)

2. Full downloadable games (eg. WarHawk) will not be picked up in the charts (and wouldn't meet the 'over $60' requirement for a PS3 title).

Not going to be recorded in any of the world's sales charts. An official statement by Sony saying such and such amount was sold would be the only way to gauge how well the downloadable version sold compared to the retail version.

WHOLE lot of casual games going on... but nice to see Bioshock staking its claim at the top of the heap where it belongs.

Yeah, the absence of Warhawk is a disappointing but unavoidable problem. When the retail game gets released, it may sell far fewer units than it otherwise would have, because many PS3 owners went for the downloadable version instead.

Sony will probably come forward and say "Well, we sold 10,000 copies on the Playstation Network, so we, y'know, rock and such."

I guess there's going to have to come a time when downloadable games get included in these charts... years from now, when the industry really starts to pull away from retail.
