LGC 07: Best of GC winners revealed

The 2007 Leipzig Games Convention has ended, and the jury has now deliberated on their verdict for the Best of GC awards. The nominees were announced last week, with little in the way of surprises. A total of 85 games were nominated for 9 awards, bearing in mind that only games which were playable on the show floor were eligible for the Best of GC awards.

Best of PC: Crysis

Jury: "Developed in Germany, CRYSIS is an exciting, futuristic battle against alien invaders. The CryENGINE 2 sets a new technological standard, with breathtaking special effects. Intelligent opponents represent a challenge to even the most experienced gamers."

Best of Xbox 360: BioShock

Jury: "Underwater survival in a sunken Art Deco city, countering crazy inhabitants, and constantly faced with the dilemma of what is right and what is wrong: "BioShock" is the most intelligent, most bizarre shooter for years."

Best of PSP: God of War: Chains of Olympus

Jury: "'God of War' elevates the action genre to an art form, including on the PlayStation Portable: where other titles descend into brutish slaughter, God of War lends the battlefield a sombre beauty."

Best of PS2: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

Jury: "Once again, PES 2008 sets new standards as far as game play is concerned: the long-distance shots crackle, the one-on-ones are even more intensive and the opponents adapt to the style of play."

Best of PS3: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

Jury: "Football is coming home: the best current football game celebrates its PS3 premiere with diving, wall building and complete online support - including leagues and rankings."

Best of Wii: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Jury: "We finally discover who can run faster and jump higher. The game unites the former arch-rivals from Sega and Nintendo, renewing the old feud in the form of a sporting contest. Mario and Sonic manage to translate Olympic disciplines into easily mastered, entertaining games fun."

Best of DS: Eye Training

Jury: "Open your eyes and train like a top sportsman! Eye Training trains hand-eye co-ordination, reflexes, visual acuity - and is great fun as well. A non-prescription DS game to be taken daily."

Best of Online: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

Jury: "Finally, an online role-play game for adults. Set in the world of the Barbarians, the adventure combines offline and online game experiences for the first time. Age of Conan could present a challenge to World of Warcraft."

Best of Hardware: Wii Balance Board

Jury: "Press-ups, headers and aerobics: Nintendo manages to combine video games with physical fitness and bring them closer to a new audience. Having already converted the remote control into a controller, the manufacturer now turns scales into a games accessory."

The award for the Best of Mobile category was not awarded due to an insufficient number of nominees. The title of "Best of GC" is awarded each year by the Games Convention for the most outstanding product performances of the computer and video game sector. GC exhibitors were able to submit their nominations for the categories of Hardware Accessories and Best Game PC, Xbox 360, PSP, PS2, PS3, Wii, NDS, Mobile and Online by 01 August 2007. Participation was open to all companies exhibiting playable products at the GC, the launch of which was not planned before the beginning of the convention.

Best of PS3: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Wow I was expecting an exclusive title would take the cake for the PS3.. Oh well seems like most of the other consoles got selections I expected such as Bioshock and Crysis. It seems like the Wii is starting to really take off, I think I'm going to have to get one soon.
Oh and sucks about there not being enough entrants for the mobile section, I swear theres some half decent titles available for mobile at the moment.

Agreed. I was certainly surprised that this title would even garner a fleeting mention let alone making the cut...

Yes Wii did but does this mean its better than MP3, Galaxies and SSBB or were they not on display?

MP3 & SMG were on display (but I think Mario deserves a break, it always won best Wii game awards at events). But Olympics winning the award... I heard it's quite shallow. But at least there is a lot of variety in the game.

Best of PS3 was PES2008? So MGS4 wasnt picked because of the trailer?
Strange. MGS4 is easily a better game, must have been just from the trailer, which was quite kick-ass. I still dont get it.

the pc, 360, psp and MAYBE the PS2 (since theres no real exclusive game being released for it anymore off the top of my head) winner i can believe..

..the rest.. while *i don't* want to start any conspiracy theories... but maybe some suitcases full of money and strippers and booze were presented to some certain people...

maybe some companies couldn't be arsed to submit by aug 01, instead worrying about perfecting their game (like the metroid or mario galaxy people). Still, for Mario and Sonic to win the wii section, the other games musta stunk REAL bad (like EA boogie)

I'm giddy at the prospect of another God of War game even if it is on such a small screen so it's awesome to see it being given game of the show for Psp.
