While an announcement (and little else) of a mobile port of the Game Boy Advance's classic Aria of Sorrow doesn't sound like much, it's the revelation of a unique canonical entry in the series, titled Castlevania: Order of Shadows, that will have the "hardcore" fans whining. Starring a grossly overdue new Belmont in the form of Desmond Belmont, it's still unclear how and where Order of Shadows plays in the overall Castlevania mythos; if the screenshots are anything to go by though, Order of Shadows appears to continue the action/platformer/RPG hybrid tradition of 1997's Symphony of the Night.
Apart from the press release dot points of "7 deadly bosses" and "13 unique enemies", most curious of all is that Castlevania: Order of Shadows will come with "18 original songs" to it's soundtrack; hopefully, that means something more fleshed out than a few headache-inducing polyphonic bleeps and blops.
Developed by Konami Mobile in conjunction with the franchise's proverbial godfather, Koji Igarashi, Castlevania: Order of Shadows is destined for release on American mobile phone carriers on September 18, with local carriers still to be confirmed. Those hoping to kill time waiting can check out the newly uploaded 'Developer's Corner' at Konami Mobile's homepage, containing Order of Shadows developer blog posts and all-round PR-centred material.
