Wii hits three US milestones

PALGN News | Outperforms the DS and more.
The July sales figure for the US are out, and they're interesting to say the least. Nintendo's domination of the UK seems to be catching - Nintendo sold more than twice as many Wiis as the nearest next-gen competitor, and almost twice as many units as the nearest competing non-Nintendo platform.

As if that's not enough, total sales for the Wii and DS combined were greater than every other competitor's platforms combined. Nintendo also sold more Wiis than both competing next-gen platforms (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) combined. Together, these three outcomes present a significant popularity milestone for Nintendo - Nintendo's likely to be cracking the champagne this weekend.

The Wii was the best selling hardware platform for the month of July at approximately 425,000 units, followed closely by the Nintendo DS at 405,000 units. Sony's old-gen and handheld platforms, the PlayStation 2 and PSP, were the next most popular platforms following with 222,000 and 214,000 sales respectively.

Interestingly, despite the PlayStation 3 price cut apparently doubling sales, it hasn't appeared to be enough to overtake the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 made up the next most popular next-gen platform with 170,000 units, with the PlayStation 3 completing the trifecta at 159,000 units. While there still remains a significant price difference between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, the gap between the two is only likely to widen thanks to the recently announced Xbox 360 price cut.

In terms of totals, the 360 still leads US sales, with roughly 5.9 million sales. Coming an increasingly closer second is the Wii with approximately 3.6 million sales, and the PlayStation 3 follows with approximately 1.6 million units sold. Within the handheld market, the Nintendo DS leads with 12.2 million sales compared against the PSP with 8.1 million sales. For full life-cycle comparisons, the PlayStation 2 has achieved 38.8 million units sold and the Game Boy Advance 35.9 million units.

In terms of software, Nintendo held three spots on the top ten with Wii Play coming in at number three, Mario Party 8 at number five, and Pokemon Diamond at number seven. Two 360 games made the top ten, with NCAA Football 08 at number one and Guitar Hero 2 bookending at number ten. The single PlayStation 3 game, NCAA Football 08, came in at number six. The PlayStation 2 shows ongoing strong performance, filling out the remainder with Guitar Hero Encore at number two, NCAA Football 08 at number four, Transformers: The Game at number eight, and Guitar Hero 2 at number nine.

As long as Nintendo don't forget the most important milestone is the 'good games' one.

^If your idea of a good game are things like brain training then yes they havent. but if your not into casuals, you may feel left out. Sure SSB, MP3 and Galaxy are coming, but i think they will focus very heavily on "casual" games this gen. But hey its paying off so hats off to Nintendo, they deserve to be back on top.

Wow! PS2 is still selling well - I cannot believe Sony are not supporting it properly in PS3 - It's a huge mistake not giving 100% compatibility. They are not leveraging their huge customer base properly.

Imagine if they had the foresight to release Guitar Hero 2 & 3, God of War 2, DMC 3 Dante's Awakening and MGS 3 Subsistence for PS2 but with special features enabled if played on PS3 - Add some extra scenes / levels, a little added content and maybe make use of the hard drive. They need to bate people into upgrading. I can't see any incentive being put forward at all. Instead a lot of people I know are keeping their PS2's and moving to Xbox 360 for next gen entertainment. If the Xbox 360 price came down a little lower and reliability was assured - I'd even consider it now.

Wii on the other hand has hit the bullseye - shame the games are light on at the moment though.

MP3, Galaxies and SSBB come out soon so you won't be saying that
as long as Wii has RE4 thats enough for me

That's the problem with Nintendo at the moment, it's relying on those 3 games so heavily for the "hardcore" market.

It needs better 3rd party support tbqfh

It has heaps of 3rd party support now its so popular, but most of them are making casual games
That MOH game looks like it could turn out good if they do it right, and that Bike on by Ubisoft that is meant to be like Excite Truck could be okay too, but I don't have my hopes up
I am getting a 360 too though so the lack of games on Wii won't be a problem as long as it still has a few
but since its not my console, I can't be disappointed in the end I guess icon_biggrin.gif
My brother on the other hand...

I agree puddingfork that Wii has some nice titles coming up - Galaxies is a natural, and I hope they end with the best Metroid ever (hard bar to jump but here's hoping) - all good games yes, but 3 just isn't enough. I can't stand anymore Mario Party or Warioware Game$ and all we seem to get is this fluff.

BTW, has anyone noticed that some of the creatures & scenes in Galaxies are a blend of a few past games played on nintendo platforms - I swear there are some creatures and settings out of KAO Kangaroo 2 on GC in there...

Tsk, don't forget BWii, Fire Emblem and Disaster. But don't worry, Nintendo has forgotten about them aswell.

As for the 3rd parties - it's a mixed bag of lollies. Most of them are licorice, and nobody likes them, but there are a few juicy green and red lollies that are worth looking into. They may not be 90%> games but definitely worth playing. Such as No More Heroes ( I <3 ), Zack and Wiki, the new Tales game, Dewy looks ok, Red Steel 2 is coming (haters shut up, its not as bad as you think, but it's not perfect), and of course Manhunt 2 icon_razz.gif - which with 2 reviews (NGamer and Games Radar) it got 92% and 9/10 respectively so huh there's a top notch game.
