As if that's not enough, total sales for the Wii and DS combined were greater than every other competitor's platforms combined. Nintendo also sold more Wiis than both competing next-gen platforms (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) combined. Together, these three outcomes present a significant popularity milestone for Nintendo - Nintendo's likely to be cracking the champagne this weekend.
The Wii was the best selling hardware platform for the month of July at approximately 425,000 units, followed closely by the Nintendo DS at 405,000 units. Sony's old-gen and handheld platforms, the PlayStation 2 and PSP, were the next most popular platforms following with 222,000 and 214,000 sales respectively.
Interestingly, despite the PlayStation 3 price cut apparently doubling sales, it hasn't appeared to be enough to overtake the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 made up the next most popular next-gen platform with 170,000 units, with the PlayStation 3 completing the trifecta at 159,000 units. While there still remains a significant price difference between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, the gap between the two is only likely to widen thanks to the recently announced Xbox 360 price cut.
In terms of totals, the 360 still leads US sales, with roughly 5.9 million sales. Coming an increasingly closer second is the Wii with approximately 3.6 million sales, and the PlayStation 3 follows with approximately 1.6 million units sold. Within the handheld market, the Nintendo DS leads with 12.2 million sales compared against the PSP with 8.1 million sales. For full life-cycle comparisons, the PlayStation 2 has achieved 38.8 million units sold and the Game Boy Advance 35.9 million units.
In terms of software, Nintendo held three spots on the top ten with Wii Play coming in at number three, Mario Party 8 at number five, and Pokemon Diamond at number seven. Two 360 games made the top ten, with NCAA Football 08 at number one and Guitar Hero 2 bookending at number ten. The single PlayStation 3 game, NCAA Football 08, came in at number six. The PlayStation 2 shows ongoing strong performance, filling out the remainder with Guitar Hero Encore at number two, NCAA Football 08 at number four, Transformers: The Game at number eight, and Guitar Hero 2 at number nine.
