Animania 2003 Wrap Up

PALGN Feature | Animania 2003 has come and gone and PALGN was there - and yes there were games too.
Animania is probably the biggest Anime Convention is Sydney and was held in the Scientia building at UNSW. It attracted a range of people from hardcore cosplaying freaks from interstate right through to the casual Evangelion fan.

Ok tell me about the damn games!

Well the good sports over at EA brought in a PAL demo version of Final Fantasy X-2, a Japanese version of it and also Need for Speed Underground. They even had a 'Test' PS2 and 'Debug' Xbox setup to play them. Not only that but several PS2s were set up with Soul Calibur 2, several Dreamcasts and a few Gamecubes. Other games included Streetfighter 3, Guilty Gear XX, a DDR arcade unit and even a pair of Initial D machines. The 'Gaming Room' was buzzing the entire time and was a great place to kill time between events.

During the day there were continuous screenings in two different lecture theatres and greats such as Azumanga Daioh, Revolutionary Girl Utena , Kaze Makase Tsukikage Ran , Scrapped Princess and Voices of Distant Star were shown. There was a great range of stuff on display and some fantastic new anime was introducted. However they didn't stick squarely to the schedule so some things were missed which was a real pity.

Madman, Kings Comics, Anime Anytime and Tamarket all had a great range of DVDs, videos, manga, keychains, plushies, figurines and much more for sale. The stalls were constantly chock full of eager Otakus so it was a bit hard to get a good look at everything.

9 Yunas and counting....

What really made the weekend though were the great events. The highlight was definitely the cosplay competitions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Some great costumes were on display, some crazy roleplaying and hilarious skits also happened. The comedy was not all of the planned variety either. With a range of other diversions including a karaoke competition, an anime debate and Art competitions and workshops there really was more to do and see than was humanly possible - you just couldn't see it all.

All in all it was a lot of good fun and should only get bigger in the future. The great dedication of many fans was really an eye opener, and helped make it so enjoyable. Well worth a look even if you aren't a hardcore Otaku - you may be but just not know it yet.

Argh~ I hate the word "otaku" being used for causal anime fans. An otaku is a possessed freak who rapes little school girls or goes around blasting the **** out of everyone because they are obsessed with their favourite anime style. A true story when the Japanese first started using the word "otaku" towards anime 'cause of some **** raping then killing little girls. It's a very discouraging word in it's native language because of that.

But don't mind me.. this is a gaming site, not an anime site.

Sheesh how about you accept the fact that the word is used in a wider context now eh? Or are you one of those 'true Otakus'?
