Sony responds to Church of England

PALGN News | Serious business.
A short time ago we reported that the Church of England was rather unimpressed at Sony for featuring the Manchester Cathedral in Resistance: Fall of Man. According to Eurogamer Sony are taking the matter rather seriously.

"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is aware of the concerns expressed by the Bishop of Manchester and the Cathedral authorities about the use of Manchester Cathedral in the game Resistance: Fall of Man, and we naturally take their concerns very seriously," the statement states.

"Resistance: Fall of Man is a fantasy science fiction game and is not based on reality. The game is set in an alternate and mythical version of Europe in the 1950s, in which the enemy are strange looking alien invaders seeking to destroy humanity.

"Whilst we believe that we have sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game, we will be contacting the Cathedral authorities in order to better understand their concerns in more detail."

Does anyone seriously think some magical human being who lives invisibly in the sky has created everything we see today? Lol! Seriously....LOL!!!! It's cool people have religion as a general direction in their lives but seriously god? Like how? Like where? Any proof? Seriously? Unicorns and Leprechauns too? No seriously? Did god also create beer? Can I ask how? And who did he give the recipe to? Is it sacred? And yea these are all rhetorical i'm just ranting.

i really didn't want to get into a religious debate, especially since it's mostly irrelevant to the case, but the thing with arguing about religion is that it's un-winnable from both sides.

Religion is about faith. God is about faith.
to prove God is to disprove faith, as you can't Not-believe in something that is real/tangible ("I don't believe in this Keyboard i'm currently writing on"). they're actually mutually exclusive in many ways.

I don't mind people believing in something, or having faith in this way, what i object to is people forcing their beliefs/faith on others. people should be allowed to believe whatever they want to believe. (and yes, i see the irony of forcing this issue icon_razz.gif)

What a stupid, idiotic comment. Obviously you know nothing about religion.

I am Catholic, I go to mass, I pray to God etc etc. However, I do not have a priest sitting outside my home telling me whats right and whats wrong. I support stem cell research and believe in Darwinism (that we evolved from apes). You and only you decide if you want to follow a religion or not and what rules and teachings you want to adhere to in a religion. For a large majority of all humans on earth, faith is part of life. Some people just need to believe in something. If you don't, fine, just do it more subtly without attacking all followers of any faith along the way.

EDIT: And yes, I've now helped in turning this into a religious debate but a comment like that can't go unanswered.

I've been pondering over the last 3 minutes of why you chose to quote Ugh the Boot there yet ranted on about how people should not influence others beliefs?

To call his belief stupid goes against everything you just said and perpetuates the ideal that many people carry here, that religious people need to mind their own **** business.

This is more ironic than when Spanca's 360 controller only worked with Sony batteries.

^ well, to be fair, Ugh was clearly flame-baiting with a comment like that, so why are you surprised that it got someone riled?

^ As baiting as it was, it was still a view. It was his perspective of how people see God.

Just found it ironic that the guy basically dismissed his view and then said belief depends on the individual.

A rhetoric situation which was probably a waste of keystrokes on my part but bah, i'm bored.

There's a difference crest. It's ok to have a personal opinion on god(hell ugh can see he believe's there is a great big red tomato in the sky who made us all), but voicing a derogatory/belittling opinion on someone's ELSE'S opinion of god is not ok.

But this ugh.Always take what he says with a tonne of salt.

He can believe what he wants, but his comment was not about his beliefs, they were about how he thinks other beliefs are stupid.

For one, I'd prefer to be referred to as 'Passa' rather than 'guy', but anyway. ugh was obviously attacking anyone who believes in something. That was not a view, it was a silly attack on religion. Not to mention the complete unprovoked nature of the comment..

In case you still don't understand crestfallen, I'll go over it once more again for you:

I'm pretty sure that there, he is expressing more than his own belief.

The way I'm reading the above posts, the moral of this thread is that we need to take care of how we treat other peoples beliefs particularly subjects of religion, sexuality, politics...

For a company who has lots of resources and time to think about their planned actions, they should be mindful of their audiences beliefs & customs. Sony is indeed guilty of at least carelessness. Personally I find Sony guilty of much more than that - as they have in the past deliberately positioned offensive messages to aid sensationalism and self promotion. With such poor behavior Sony needs to respond to more than the concerns of the Church of England.

I'll step off the soap box now.
