Sony responds to Church of England

PALGN News | Serious business.
A short time ago we reported that the Church of England was rather unimpressed at Sony for featuring the Manchester Cathedral in Resistance: Fall of Man. According to Eurogamer Sony are taking the matter rather seriously.

"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is aware of the concerns expressed by the Bishop of Manchester and the Cathedral authorities about the use of Manchester Cathedral in the game Resistance: Fall of Man, and we naturally take their concerns very seriously," the statement states.

"Resistance: Fall of Man is a fantasy science fiction game and is not based on reality. The game is set in an alternate and mythical version of Europe in the 1950s, in which the enemy are strange looking alien invaders seeking to destroy humanity.

"Whilst we believe that we have sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game, we will be contacting the Cathedral authorities in order to better understand their concerns in more detail."

Their concerns being that the game completely destroys the ideas expressed through the bible with another race appearing from the ground?

Their concern is a little confusing, I'm not sure exactly what it is that they are trying to pin on Sony. Good to see that they're taking them seriously anyway, I'm sure they'll come to some agreement about the use of the building. You wouldn't think there'd be a problem, since the game isn't even set in modern times/a realistic world.

Damn you stole my joke icon_evil.gif However if that movie is anything to go by, Sony will lose.

This whole thing just seems so ridiculous. Surely the church has more pressing matters to deal with than video games. Are they that starved for publicity?

I am not one to defend any religion of any kind but do not confuse an Anglican church for fundamentalists

Church of England is a slower moving one (as its the biggest) but the Anglicans are very good at changing with the times. The only ones really going backwards have been the fundamentalists that have been making headlines in the states with their stupid "Intelligent Design" propaganda.

Again, not sticking up for a religious institution but these guys are at least trying to keep up with the times. I think this was more of an exaggeration of one congregation

Sony just needs to tell the church that resistance isn't... real. On second thought the church wont understand, they have failed to to identify the fine line between reality and a story for thousands of years, whats to stop them identifying it today?

Is this going to turn into one of those religion vs reality debates? I currently have my hands full of those as it is.

I suspect that the issue is to do with money and copyright infringement of sorts, maybe?

ie. a design that was commissioned by the church is being used in a way that generates funds and that no royalties/reimbursements have been paid?

I just have my handful of religious fanatics on my a** as it is which could get me starting my own YouTube channel which will end up getting me (like all other atheists on there) getting death threats or getting fagged getting banned because you proved them wrong etc

I agree with you, though the fundamentalists do not unfortunately.

This issue will be resolved, even if it means sony having to put a couple of food vouchers in the donation plate.

I doubt the church would really have a big impact on a simple game anyway, I can't see parent's taking the advice of a church nowadays, if they want to hurt sony get Oprah to complain.

I just want to know how the Church of England found out, did they play the game icon_razz.gif

Walked in on the bishop red handed, and in quick thought the bishop pointed out the church violence in the game and saved himself the embaressment >.>

Alienating more customers - not smart. The point is, Sony should know better. They know what is appropriate and what is not but clearly don't care.

Before they became a financial basket case, Sony entered moral bankruptcy. Sony continue to demonstrate that they have no class and no regard for anyone but themselves. Little wonder so many people around the world are gleeful at the prospect of their demise. If they fall who will care? Another company will take their place - hopefully one better deserving, hopefully a better corporate citizen.

They fell from grace before the endless lies & hype long associated with Sony marketing, long before they slaughtered a goat, before racial PSP posters, before the crown of thorn advertisement - Who believes Sony today? Who respects them? They have no credibility. High time to grow up and act responsibly Sony. Failure to do so means certain failure. PSwhat?

I am in no way religious in any context, but I don't think the churches view on this is that "wrong"... in that, for them, the church is a holy place, a place of peace or whatever, and sony have made a game showing scenes of massive violence going on inside the church which they hold as sacred. I can understand how someone could be uncomfortable with that... But to be honest, I couldn't care less about them being offended. There will be something offensive to someone in basically every game. Doesn't matter....

The funny thing is aliens are more of a reality than god will ever be.

I hate religion...that and land have been the cause of the worlds biggest problems. Funny how something so fictional can cause so many problems.

Edit:

LOVE IT!!! icon_cool.gif

Does anyone seriously think some magical human being who lives invisibly in the sky has created everything we see today? Lol! Seriously....LOL!!!! It's cool people have religion as a general direction in their lives but seriously god? Like how? Like where? Any proof? Seriously? Unicorns and Leprechauns too? No seriously? Did god also create beer? Can I ask how? And who did he give the recipe to? Is it sacred? And yea these are all rhetorical i'm just ranting.

While I agree with you Ugh, this is not the time to start a religious debate. We all know they tend to get a little...heated here and lets just avoid it for today.

Sony are treading softly, they'll resolve this 'issue' and I'm hungry.

Good day to you, sir.
