Ubiday Wrap Up

PALGN Feature | We take a look at what went down.
While European game journos have been running amok for the past few days in Paris, Ubisoft also held a Ubidays event a few weeks ago in San Francisco. At this event, PALGN had an opportunity to go hands-on with Ubisoft's upcoming line-up for 2007. But, before we leap headfirst into the games themselves, we should rewind back to the beginning, on Wednesday 9 May.

On that day, we departed for San Francisco from Sydney Airport at 2pm. Fourteen hours later, we arrived at San Francisco airport at 10am on, um, Wednesday 9 May. Yup, time travel; we've mastered it, and can tick it off the "to do" list. The following day (at 2pm - still with us?) we headed to a place called "Terra" for the show.

It was clear from the beginning that Ubisoft has a fine line-up for 2007. Eleven titles were on display, with the one notable omission being Assassin's Creed, which looks set for a big unveil at E3. Our initial disappointment at the lack of Assassin's Creed was soon forgotten, however, when we saw just what was on show - a chocolate fountain. After gaping at the chocolate fountain for a few seconds, we got down to business.

The titles on display included Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Haze, Naruto: Rise of Ninja, Blazing Angels: Secret Missions, The Settlers: Rise of an Empire, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Tom Clancy's End War, Jam Sessions, My Word Coach and My Life Coach. We were expecting Dark Messiah of Might and Magic to make an appearance, but it must have been a last-minute omission.

At the end of the show, the producer for Assassin's Creed presented a little bit of information on the game, and showcased some of the latest footage for the title. Ubisoft then left us to our own devices in San Franciso, and 24 hours later we were on the plane home, feeling a little jetlagged but quite impressed by the show.

Just like our living room. Sort of.

So, over the next week, PALGN will be presenting in-depth previews on all of the titles we played at the event. It's clear that we now know a whole lot more about Ubisoft's line-up for the rest of the year, and with first-person shooters Haze and Brothers in Arms, Tom Clancy titles Splinter Cell Conviction and EndWar, and action games like Naruto Rise of Ninja and Blazing Angels Secret Missions, Ubisoft has a very diverse catalogue of titles in the works.

PALGN would like to extend our sincere thanks to Chad Acers and Owen Hughes at Ubisoft for the trip. Stay tuned over the next week, as we'll be looking at all of the aforementioned titles in depth, and giving you a heads-up on Ubisoft's plans for 2007.
