Fracture on the way from LucasArts

PALGN News | Big blokes with guns shooting at each other in the future.
LucasArts and Day 1 Studios, who brought you MechAssault, have just let it slip through a press release that they are hard at work on new third-person shooter Fracture for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, it's a third-person shooter with a twist of sorts - the concept of 'terrain deformation'.

The world is not as we know it. Various disasters have altered the planet's landscape, and people are fighting over all sorts of fun things. Set in 2161, players will take on the role of Mason Briggs, a demolitions guy working for the Atlantic Alliance. Their rivals are the Pacifican army, who use genetically enhanced soldiers. Nasty. To make up for it though, the Atlantic Alliance soldiers are cybernetically enhanced, so it's all fair.

What LucasArts are hoping sets Fracture apart from the fact is the use of terrain deformation. Basically, players have various weapons and tools at their disposal which will change the shape of the land. For example, if Briggs comes across a big wall he can't climb, he can fire his rocket launcher to blow a hole in the ground under it to pass.

The game has an estimated release date of mid-2008. Until then, there's screenshots in the media panel, and a trailer on the official website, here.

And there you go, people. More evidence that increased technology DOES add to gameplay.

I assumed a gimmick B.T. (before trailer).

Boy, was I wrong.

geomod was cool in Red Faction, and it still looks cool here.

i hope it takes off as a gimmick though, games need more destruction imo.
