Call of Duty 4 due to be announced this weekend

PALGN News | WWII setting scrapped?
Call of Duty 4, you probably won't be surprised to learn, is on the cards. That's the word from Activision, which informed Next-Gen.biz that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare would be officially confirmed on April 28 at 10 a.m. PDT, or early in the morning of April 29 in Australia and New Zealand. It was also revealed that Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 creator Infinity Ward would be once again taking over development duties from Treyarch, the studio behind Call of Duty 3.

The subtitle of the game is likely to raise some eyebrows, however, with "Modern Warfare" seeming to indicate that Call of Duty 4 will not be set in World War II, but in a more contemporary setting.

No word yet on a release date or which platforms the game is heading to, but stay tuned.

What like the modern setting of BF2? I mean they already took the subtitle...

I guess they really have to incorporate new features which will want users to play it, because atm i get my modern warfare fix from bf2142 so they have to really impress me with this game to get me to consider purchasing the game.

They could do the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars... That *could* be fun.

there was news on this awhile ago - theyve had this on the board for ages, and i believe theyve actually already where working on it along side cod3. yes it is based on modern warfare - which came a surprise for most as no one thought the cod franchise would break into new ground - but if its anything to go by from previous titles, we know this will be a great title and a change to the scene, as you know we can only play "WW stories" for so long before they start to repeat...

The fact Infinity Ward is back in the fold gives me hope his could be a great game after the lackluster COD3.

^ Exactly drunkmonk. If Treyarch was handling this I would probably look the other way, but Infinity Ward is a whole different story.

This should be awesome!

Its great they've kicked out the idiots at Treyarch they destroyed the best series in history. However i dont know how modern warfare will go... i hope they go back to WW2 later on cos i dont like modern warfare games as much as ww2.

i dont think COD would ever discontinue their roots, i think they just trying to attract a new end user?? im sure their are people out there that only prefer modern FPS...

contemporary?? Whatever, please just be on PC. Playing 3 on the controller.. just didn't work to well for me. Meh. World War I game would work well if it was done properly.

i'm kinda mixed about this.

personally, i love the WW2 setting, especially through the Russian Campaigns as they are quite different to a lot of the WW2 stuff that gets made these days.

but i'd also love to see what that talent could do with modern settings and weapons.

what i'd really love, is if they made some sort of alternative history game. same european theatre, but with modern weaponry, as if the war didn't end in 1945. it would be sweet, but i seriously doubt that they'd leave their realism roots for a science-fiction tale.

*goes back to waiting for CoD3 PC*

^ If they were to do that they'd be competing almost directly with Resistance. I like the idea, but it's probably 'too soon' from a creative point of view.

I share a similar view as Obs. I'm not sick of the WW2 setting at all (I love that history) so I could play up to Call of Duty 10 in that setting. I also think CoD3 copped way too much slack, and Treyarch did a very good job with it. Sure it didn't advance the series, but if you were a fan of the previous two, it gave you more of the same which I'd never complain about.

A modern spin-off could be fun though, and in the hands of IW I trust that it will bring a fresh and thoroughly enjoyable approach to the genre.

How about Call of Duty Napoleonic Warfare. Now that would be a fun game icon_smile.gif

I think this is a good a time as any to use this pic:

No matter what you call it, it's still just pointing a gun at something and pulling the trigger. I think I've moved beyond that.

I for one love the call of duty series, And im with Spanca I could play COD10 jsut due to the fact the story is so interesting and historical. I love learning about World War 2 while I am having fun.

So... this article is reporting that it's been confirmed that CoD4 will be confirmed in the future? Are you going to report on it again once it's actually been confirmed? icon_razz.gif

Considering the rate at which soldiers lost their lives in WWI, I don't imagine the campaigns would be very long for such a game.

You'd be waiting in a trench for the whistle to be blown, then you'd jump over the wall of the trench, and... the campaign would invariably have to end, as German machine gun fire wastefully ended the lives of thousands upon thousands of computer-generated soldiers.

It'd have to be like the 'Wario Ware' of war-related FPS games - lots of very short missions stuck back-to-back.

Nah, seriously, I think it would be a cool idea to explore in a game, but yeah, I don't know how they'd implement the months of stalemate and rapid loss of life into a game with substantial campaigns.

That said, now that I'm thinking about it, a game with the whole trench experience (thinking back to history classes on WWI) could be something very (and I mean very) engrossing.

Back on topic, Capoeira - awesome pic!

There are a lot of WWII FPS game out there right now, and I think it's a good idea to try to broaden the franchise, but perhaps it shouldn't be braodened into something that is already being explored by other developers. Something unique, yet incredibly engrossing to play, is the key.

Perhaps WWI would work afterall...

Call of Duty (1 and 2) are my fave games on the PC... they were so engorsing and really took you into the environment. and since WW2 is so interesting and facinating... i am really dissapointed by this. CoD2 is probably my most favourite game ever, along side God of War, and i am so dissapointed. i probably will still get it, but it just wont be the same. speaking of which.. off to install CoD2 now after my format icon_biggrin.gif

<wat he said here>
Yeah, could work though, in a form of a Metal of Honor Game, where the 1st level is trench warfare, & then you get promoted & stuff to do like undercover missions. Just abit surprised that no one has done it that's all, time setting & theme is totally new & if is done correctly would sell a bucket-load.
