Thompson blames US school shootings on...

PALGN News | You've got three guesses.
Anti-video game critic Jack Thompson has claimed that there is a link between video games and the latest round of U.S. school shootings. Earlier today, a gunman at the Virginia Tech university killed 33 people, before turning the gun on himself.

And, while the dead are still being counted, Thompson has leapt on the story with all his usual levels of sensitivity and good taste in a bid to further his own political agenda. Referred to as a "school shooting expert" on Fox News, Thompson suggested that the shootings could be tied to video games, singling out Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto games for special criticism.

"What the FBI and secret service found after the Columbine shooting was the common denominator being the immersion of the perpetrators in incredibly violent entertainment, most notably violent video games," stated Thompson, who then went on to use previous school shootings as examples of the supposed link between video games and violence. One of his examples was Jeff Weise, the perpetrator of the Red Lake High School massacre in March 2005, who Thompson claimed had, "rehearsed for the massacre by playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in order to get his heart-rate down and be able to kill."

"So that's one thing the authorities are going to be looking at, because to be able to pull this off, with this high body count, one has to have rehearsed it in order to get ready to do it," concluded Thompson.

Thompson's interview with Fox News can be heard in full here.

My condolences go out to the families and friends of those killed.

Jumping to the conclusion that video games were involved is childish and uninformed.

The real issues are firearms regulation, and the mental health system. The US has very lax firearms laws, and a very poor mental health system (their entire health system is a joke, unless you can afford expensive private health insurance). American's as a whole, don't want to give up their "right to bear arms" despite the number of shootings. The government won't spend the money on mental health, as it's something that is generally kept out of view of the majority of voters and therefore brushed under the carpet. Who's going to win an election by investing more money into mental health?

BTW Qbert, apart from being offensive, you've only stolen one of Wil Anderson's jokes that everybody has already heard. Probably last night when he did that routine again on the Comedy Festival Gala.

He's old, he'll die sooner or later

Qbert, if you are going to bash religion, be origional (and save it for slashdot)

WTF BovineDeath & renegadesx? I've never heard of the joke from Will Anderson (I hate that guy) or anyone else for that matter. I thought it was pretty obvious it was a joke. Do you really **** think that i want to ban video games, literature and religion. I'm **** religious you morons! Take a joke!

^is your friend to convey sarcasm .Put it at the end of every sarcastic remark, a surefire way to let others know your being tongue in cheek-and to remove baked on stains.

Lol, I think you two really took Qbert too seriously, he was obviously being sarcastic.

And as for Thompson, what a f**k asshole, I know it's been said before but I can't get over what an asshole this guy is.

I seriously can't see why the U.S hasn't brought in gun laws, I mean, 32 people, what a waste of life.

Someone summed that up beautifully on another forum:
"You would never see them blaming lack of US gun control of course. How unconstitutional! How many of these kinds of shootings happen in Australia? I can walk into a shop here and buy the same game, but not the same gun (nearly as easily). Coincidence?"

While gun-control (lack there-of) is only part of the problem, and the least likey to be addressed, it certainly is part of the problem.
Apparently you can buy such pistols in Australia still but you'd need to go through a background check and cooling off period first. Not that a background check will always be helpful, a shooter might never have a record of mental health problems if he's never sought out the assistance of a doctor or psychological professional. He/she might not even have a criminal record.

Some people have been campaigning for such pistols to be banned as well, not unreasonable I think as they serve no purpose to farmers. I guess they are popular for home defense and crime.

Thompson blaming a school shooting on Videogames is pretty much his stairway to heaven. He thinks this will elevate his status in the media, when it's simply going to make his credibility lower.

If this guy ever played video games, get ready to hear about Thompson for the rest of our lives on the incident. If he wasn't a gamer, Thompson's opinion will get totally lost because nobody cares about him. Either way we lose.

I heard on the news that the guy was Chinese and had been in America for less than a year, so it's doubtful he even OWNED any video games.

Why do we care what he says again?

I assume that you're talking about Semi-auto pistols? I was under the impression that all semi-auto firearms were outlawed following Port Arthur, with the buy-back schemes and so forth?

My mum actually mentioned the shootings to my dad earlier today and I thought to myself "I wonder how long it will take someone to blame this on video games?"

happened sooner than I thought it would.

Honestly, they use "guns" and "violence" to get people's interest in joining the army, are those very people trying to say that video games are influencing killings when the army is not? Just watch 1 hour of the news and I guarantee* you will see at least one solider holding a gun or some other military related scenery.

Quotes are now up in the article, and if you use thatsmymouse, the video has been dropped in the article.

My heartrate doesn't really increase when I'm popping prostitute's heads on GTA, so I dunno what the hell he's on about. Also a scientific study I read about said that the killers emmerse themselves in a senseless world in their own head to objectify the killing of others.

Way to spout yet more nonsense Mr. Thompson.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/washington-post/washington-post-links-shooter-to-counterstrike-253117.php

Apparently now Dr Phil (the "doctor) agrees with Mr Thompson (the " school shootings expert. And apparently Counter Strike is a Microsoft game, who knew?

They are blaming Counter Strike now, not GTA (sorry Thompson but you lost in your own blame game)

I thought it was kind of 'funny' that all the pro gun lobbyists use these kinds of tragic events to promote their cause, and try to make it legal to carry a gun around with you all the time.

The theory being that if the other students had been allowed to carry guns with them they would have been able to defend themselves and not as many people would have been killed!

There was some lady on TV talking about a different incident where she had left her gun in her car (as the law requires I guess) when she and her husband went into a shop and she watched as her husband was killed by a robber. She was saying that if she had her gun with her she could have saved his life.

In theory this might sound good, but it could only lead to more shootings in general as people pop a cap in someone’s ass at the drop of a hat. icon_rolleyes.gif

I think that it was only semi-auto rifles and pump action shotguns. There could have been more, but semi auto handguns are still legal, just very hard to get.

Really? Fair enough, my mistake. At least they're har to get, I guess - although I really can't see a reason for them to be on the market at all.
