Capcom announces Street Fighter II remix for XBLA/PSN

PALGN News | Street Fighter II. Again.
At a press conference last night, Capcom announced that Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, a graphically upgraded version of the final arcade revision of Street Fighter II, to be available as a download on Xbox Live Arcade and Sony's PlayStation Network. It will not be developed by Capcom, but by Digital Eclipse and Backbone Entertainment.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will be the exact same game, but with new high resolution sprites drawn by artists from Udon Comics, so that it can run in 1080p resolution without any scaling. There are not yet any screenshots, and none of the art has been created yet, but Capcom showed a comparison between a sprite from Guilty Gear and what they hope to achieve, claiming the game will be the next level up in detail from Sammy's fighting series.

Online play is confirmed, including voice chat, rankings/leaderboards, different matchmaking options, and stat tracking. It may not be released at the same time on PS3 and 360 ("We will be coordinating such that they are within a week of each other," said Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson) but they hope it will be out this year.

While it's nice that the series is still on at least Capcom USA's mind, it has to be said that yet another version of the clunky and ancient Street Fighter II probably isn't what most fans of the series are after. It would be nice if Ryu and pals took a small leaf from Megaman's book, and learned to count to four.

*sigh* if this is like the first XBLA SF2 then it will have a very laggy online experience for us aussie gamers which is what killed it for me. It also doesnt help that the AI in single player was beefed up to dog status.

I'm going to stay optimistic. The real gem would be "Street Fighter 2: The Movie".

Meanwhile, where's Final Fight and Strider? Does it matter? You can't get the top 2 XBLA games at the moment in Australia. icon_sad.gif

BTW, the SF2: The Movie joke is not to be taken seriously. Do not release this game for XBLA or ever speak of it again.

Agreed, the matchmaking was broken. The game really needs a Country filer. Any fighting game cannot work intercountry. If you play with AU/NZ players, it's virtually lag free however.

Third Strike FTW!

To be honest im bored of Street Fighter 2 now, there are way to many ports. They really should try something new..

Wicked!! the more capcom games on XBLA the better. I'd kill to find out what happened to the TMNT arcade games though.

Considering that I haven't played nearly enough Street Fighter 2 as I should have, I'm looking forward to this, and hopefully online will be lag free.

I'll be content the moment Street Fighter 3 hits XBLA, with the amount I play it in the Arcades.

Makoto! More like MASHOTO!

That said, new SF2 or rather revamped still interest me. I'll like this and have a lot of fun playing it! Moment I get a 360..

And thus the reason I held off buying Hyper Fighting ever confident that the dependable, franchise whore Capcom would release SSF2 in due course.

Hopefully they resolve the online issues but if not I won't be too bitter as I enjoy the single player game. I've already got SSF2 on GBA but a version with online and proper light/med/heavy punches and kicks is always welcome.

Maybe the AI won't be crazy-go-nuts a million light punches a second?

Marvel vs Capcom 2 would be fantastic to play lag free, against international opponents!

SF II was once fun for me, but why dont Capcom promote their later stuff? Why not Alien versus Predator or Dungeons & Dragons? Some more beat 'em ups!

Capcom no longer own the Marvel license so MvC2 is unlikely.

They don't have either of those licenses S.Jaworski.

I don't know why everyone's so down beat on here, SSF2T with completely redone artwork sounds great to me. The producer is answering questions here.

Here's the comparison shot so you can see what they are going for.

Cheers for that picture. It provides a lot of insight in my opinion, and man Ryu looks like he is ready to kill!

I still say they should have gone with the Rumble Fish engine, but I'm quite content with that, and can't wait to see just how well it's pulled off.

As long as it isn't as crazy as Guilty Gear in the gameplay department also. =D

SSF2T is ancient, busted and cheap. Sticking new sprites over it won't change that. For purists (like me) who like the old-school brokenness sometimes, it won't even be the real thing, but some bastard child of the old and the new. And it's being developed by Digital Eclipse, who have a spotty record on all their retro work.

Alpha 2, 2I and 3S are all vastly superior Street Fighter games.

Agreed David, but since we haven't played it yet, potentially it could be good, and true to the original.

True, but SSF2T is nearing 14 years old, so it's hardly surprising.

Is Capcom merely scared of advancing the series or are they no longer interested in doing so? As a person who is personally fondest for the Street Fighter Alpha series (aswell as the SNK fighters), I dont understand the hype behind the old school Street Fighter II titles. The gameplay was just too limited for my liking.

Each to their own and I hope they do the original justice in any case.

If they released Alpha now, you wouldn't buy all the SF2 games afterwards would you? Once they sell all the SF2 games, they will move onto Alpha.

I think most people who started with SF2 preferred it to Alpha. For me its just a classic, all the stages and music I really like. I prefer the simpler fighting engine also; none of this isms stuff. Also I'm not sure to many Westerners would have been fond of the more cell-shaded look the Alpha series adopted. But heh that's just my take icon_confused.gif
