Gears of War film rights go to New Line

PALGN News | In a world torn apart by war, one man...
It appears that we can add one more game to the ever growing list of titles ported to the big screen, with Variety revealing today that the rights for a Gears of War film have gone to New Line Cinema.

Stuart Beattie, the man behind the pen that wrote Collateral and the screenplays of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, among others, will take the lead writing role on the film. Wyck Godfrey, producer of I Robot, and Marty Bowen will be taking up the reigns of production. CliffyB, lead designer for Epic Games and Gears of War, will be involved in the film as executive producer and consult on its development for Epic.

An auction was held in which the 21 page treatment put together by Beattie won out over other submissions, leaving New Line with the prize. Once the script has been finalised, the two producers intend to begin their search for a director, with a mid 2009 release in their sights.

"I'm not a gamer, but what blew me away about 'Gears' was how it captures the mythology of a war mission and how high the stakes are," said Godfrey.

Concerned with the below par responses garnered by most video game to film adaptations, Vice President of Epic, Mark Rein stated, "Our first and foremost philosophy is to do no harm, so we debated heavily the idea of doing a movie at all, but we feel we stacked the deck in our favour by working with the best players."

We here at PALGN just have one question - is there an actor out there with big enough shoulders, both literally and metaphorically, to carry the role of Marcus Fenix?

Well, that is interesting. I certainly like the writer and producer who are in charge, too bad I don't really like the game. icon_sad.gif Should be very interesting to see how this turns out, I wonder how popular GOW will be in 2009?

I don't know what that character is meant to be like but New Line wouldn't have much trouble getting into contact with Kane Hodder for it. Considering he's done movies for them in the past. icon_cool.gif Only problem is, he's only good for physical stunt work, I doubt he'd be able to carry a speaking character for too long.

I'd be more worried about who'd they could find to play The Cole Train, baby! icon_razz.gif
Sure, they modeled him off his voice actor - but then they 'embiggened' his arms something chronic.

^ Its the Cole Train, baby! haha They could probably use someone like Orlando Bloom to play Baird icon_lol.gif But seriously wouldnt Michael Clarke Duncan be perfect for Cole? He certainly has got the looks.

Cant wait for this one, who cares if it ends up having a lame story - just like the game it will be awesome to watch regardless.

Typical. Some movies get highly criticised for lack of story, yet you only care about how it looks. A great looking movie with a terrible story will not do too well, that has also been proven with games.

People dont alwasy want a good story, sometimes they just want to chill out and enjoy some some nice images - say for instance Into the Blue with Jessica Alba icon_razz.gif Sometimes the action scenes can keep a movie interesting without very much story assisatance umm Snakes on a Plane? heh.

Err... So where does, say, The Fast and The Furious fit in to that theory? Some of the games and movies with the best storylines never get seen by the mass populace, in favour of shallow yet flashy experiences. That has been proven, if anything has.

And it's one of my goals in life to promote those games and movies to people, since I reckon they're missing out a lot of the time by following stereotypical views. It's a shame when games get ignored when they don't deserve to be. It just shows that people only care about the action these days, yet they still complain when they think the story is weak. It's hard to please people. I guess a movie/games has to be either full of action, or focus heavily on a well developed story to be successful, games that aim for both seem to fail, unfortunately.

It is a terrible shame that many good artists/games/films/etc. go unoticed and never get the accolades that they deserve, but that's just the way things go I guess. There really is no accounting for taste icon_wink.gif
