Warhammer 40k MMOG in development

PALGN News | THQ and Games Workshop hope to extend their success with the franchise.
THQ and Games Workshop has announced an agreement to work together in developing new projects in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, including a massively multiplayer online game.

Relic Entertainment will not be developing the MMOG, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. Newly formed Texas-based developer Vigil Games will be working on the project, with David Adams, former creator/director of several projects for NCSoft, at the helm. Other major contributors on the project include famed comic artist Joe Madureira, known for his work on Marvel’s Uncanny X-Men series, and a handful of other ex-MMO members.

Speaking to GameSpot, THQ executive vice president of worldwide publishing Kelly Flock made it clear that the project is in its "very early” stages of development, dodging questions regarding release date and gameplay specifics.

Further good news for Warhammer 40K fans is that Kelly Flock mentioned that THQ would be making future announcements regarding the Dawn of War franchise, as well as other projects outside of the RTS and MMO genres.

Ok so that'd be an MMO and an RTS for both their worlds, and I haven't played a GW based game since Rites of War back in '99 *sigh*

I hope it's only an Inquisitor MMO, because anything else doesn't fit the canon.

Is this somehow different to Warhammer Online which has been in development for the last two years?

Warhammer = fantasy
Warhammer 40k = sci-fi

On the surface they're quite similar other than the settings, but therein lie some rather significant differences.

You mean the other way around, I'm pretty sure both of those are older than the video games icon_wink.gif Though the only thing Starcraft really borrows is the Tyranids and I'm not sure if they were in the tabletop game before Starcraft was released.

i meant it only as an analogy, but yeah, the tabletop games have been around significantly longer than the computer games.

as for WH40K equaling StarCraft:
Terran = Space Marines/Imperial Guards
Zerg = Tyranids (which were around long before SC, i think they were introduced to the WH40K universe in the mid-80s)
Protoss = Eldar.

WH40k was originally Marines vs. Tyranids, back in Space Hulk
