Top Five Fridays: Gaming Characters

PALGN Feature | Our staff pick their favourites.
Welcome to PALGN's newest fortnightly Friday piece, the top five Fridays. Every second Friday we'll be choosing a topic for our staff to vote on. We thought we'd start off nice and easy with our top five gaming characters. As this is a personal article it is based on our personal preference, but if your favourite character didn't make the cut then feel free to let us know of your opinions in the forums. As usual we'd appreciate any feedback on this feature, so if you have any insults, complaints or virtual spit then sling it towards the article topic.

It's hard to believe, but in the 90s gaming characters were a huge part of gaming. Of course Mario and Sonic are amongst the most memorable mascots but there was also Bubsy, Cool Spot, Alex Kidd, Gex, Croc, Bonk and more. Whilst it may seem like the idea of using a gaming character to promote a title is now defunct, gaming characters are just as popular now. Some recent examples include Lara Croft, Sly Cooper, Master Chief, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and Crash Bandicoot.

We asked our staff what their five top gaming characters of all time were. After some bickering and verbal slinging matches we came up with our top five gaming characters of all time.

5: Sonic the Hedgehog

The popularity of Sonic the Hedgehog may have waned in recent years but in the 90s Sonic was one of the most recognisable mascots in gaming. Despite the fact that the hedgehog's recent games have been really poor there is no doubting that Sonic is still extremely popular. Artist Naoto Ōshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka are credited to designing the fast hedgehog whose soul purpose at the time was to take on Mario. Back in the 90's there really were only two mascots who mattered in gaming - Mario and Sonic, and depending on your console of choice you'd stand behind your mascot's games as if they were your best friends. 15 years after Sonic's original debut, the blue hedgehog has appeared in comics, cartoons, books and games. Sonic's next appearance is in the promising Sonic and the Secret Rings.

4: Solid Snake

Solid Snake originally debuted in 1987 in the Metal Gear titles, which are created by Hideo Kojima. When Metal Gear Solid was released on the PSOne back in 1998 Solid Snake became a recognisable mascot almost instantly. Since the aforementioned title debuted, every new Metal Gear title has been highly anticipated by eager gamers. Despite Solid Snake's popularity he wasn't playable for a long time in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and players controlled Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Solid Snake only makes a cameo appearance in the Snake vs. Monkey minigame. Solid Snake will return once again for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but in this game he looks to be edging towards retirement. The Metal Gear Acid titles for the PSP both feature Snake, but are side stories set in a parallel universe, the games are also card based battling games. Whether we see Solid Snake in Guns of the Patriots this year is still unknown but he will be making an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so gamers looking for a Solid Snake fix will at least get a chance to beat Samus in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Why would you want to beat Samus? Well she pegged third spot, that's why.

3: Samus Aran:
The original Metroid game, which debuted in 1986, originally painted Samus Aran as a male cyborg. However, at the end of the game it was revealed that Samus was actually a female, a shock that we're only just getting over twenty years later. Samus may seem like a character that has appeared in a lot of titles but there was a large gap between her appearance in Super Metroid (1994) and Metroid Prime (2002). Since then Samus has appeared in a sequel to Metroid Prime and two DS games, Metroid Prime Pinball and Metroid Prime Hunters. In fact, a demo for Metroid Prime Hunters was included with the first batch of Nintendo DS consoles. Samus makes a return later this year in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii. Corruption was originally expected to be available at the launch of the Wii but was delayed until March 2007. Unfortunately it appears that the game has undergone another delay, so the title should be out before the end of the year.

2: Link:
Link only just missed out on being our favourite mascot of all time and looking back at his history it's not hard to tell why. Link is another one of Nintendo's most popular franchises, although he doesn't appear in as many games as Mario. Link first appeared in 1986 in The Legend of Zelda. In the Zelda titles you'll generally need to journey through Hyrule to save Zelda from Ganon. Link's latest appearance was in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which was one of the best launch titles for the Wii and is one of the last GameCube titles released. Unlike Mario, Link very rarely appears in titles other than The Legend of Zelda games. Link appears as a bonus character in the GameCube version of Soul Calibur II and is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros series. Link's next appearance will be in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, which is set for release on the Nintendo DS in the last quarter of the year.

1: Mario
There really should be no surprises about our number one mascot here at PALGN. Mario is one of the most successful franchises of all time and unlike Sonic, whose games have degenerated in quality recently, the Mario titles are solid, enjoyable games. Mario's latest 2D platformer game New Super Mario Bros was well received critically and commercially and Super Mario 64 is still considered by many as one of the best games of all time. Mario's catchphrase of "It's a-me, Mario" is recognisable to just about every gamer worldwide. Surprisingly, Mario has only appeared in a few platformers in the past twenty five years but this hasn't stopped him appearing on over 100 games - in fact Mario can be found racing a kart, playing tennis, golf, basketball, soccer and snowboarding. Ironically Mario actually started off being known as Jumpman in the Donkey Kong arcade game but his name was changed in Donkey Kong Junior. Mario mania was so high during the 90's that there was plenty of Mario branded merchandise including pinball games, comic series, books, puzzles and stickers. In 1993 a Super Mario Bros film was released and Mario has also appeared in other television shows. Mario has also had the honour of appearing on every Nintendo platform since his debut.

Whoa talk about generic.

Snake was the only mildly left field one;even then he's hardly obscure or non-mainstream.
Yeah, I think the next one will be more interesting.

That's what happens with preferential voting. Most didn't vote Mario #1, but overall he won on preferences.

Perhaps we should do a "Top 5 favourite obscure video games characters" article one day.

Big no-no for #3, and what happened to Master Chief???

2. Solid Snake

^ Yeah I would have had Master Chief on the top 5 list for sure, hes pretty much the mascot for Microsoft gaming now and considering sales alot of other people must like playing him too. Samus and Solid Snake part of the top 5 characters of all time? I wouldnt include them but I spose it all boils down to opinion. Mario, Link and Sonic are of course legendary and deserve there positions.

I wouldn't have included Master Chief like some are suggesting, but I wouldn't have included Samus either. She has ZERO personality. The games may be great, but the character is not.

Samus, Master Chief, Link... all of those are bland characters. The only things really special about Mario or Sonic is their age and iconic status.

^ But Master Chief is so kick ass. He might not have much of a personality but he does what needs to be done without hesitation. Thats why I like him.

Samus and Link have the age and iconic status in my opinion. Not quite as old as Mario but they're as old as Sonic, right?

Mario made his debut in 1981 with Donkey Kong. Whilst he was popular-ish before the release of Super Mario Bros in 1985, he really became popular after that point. This places Link (LoZ, 1985) and Samus (Metroid, 1985) on practically the same level. Sonic came in 1990/1991. So, as Link and Samus are older than Sonic, they clearly have age and iconic status on their side.

Edit: Just a note, he was only callled Jumpman in the Japanese version of Donkey Kong. Advertising for the US version clearly shows that he was named 'Mario' for the Donkey Kong released there. In other words, he became Mario at the first Donkey Kong.

Both Master Cheif and Samus lack personality, I would replace Snake with Duke Nukem , I also would yes kick Samus out and put in either Larry Lovage or Leon Kennady

Also who says a playable character has to be one on the list? Cortana, Princess Zelda, etc, or even who says they had to be a good guy? Dr Robotnik, Bowser. My fave bad guy is Lan Di

i don't really see the issue with this coming across as a popularity contest, of course it is, it said so in the article.

i don't really see how anyone could not have Mario and/or Sonic on their list. no other characters have done more for the advancement of videogames. i can see going the one or the other approach, especially from some of the older staffers, since the fanboy behaviour was encouraged during the late 80s/early 90s between Nintendo and Sega, but to skip them altogether, it would take a person of odd tastes to do that.

i'm not surprised Link made it on, but i'd not have picked Samus or Snake to have made it. having said that, i don't know that i can think of too many other characters that might have made it.

Lara Croft, perhaps, though i've personally never been a fan of the Tomb Raider games, but otherwise it's like the article said, characters for the sake of characters is dying out somewhat. it seems the narrative of games is getting in the way of characterisation. it would be impossible to make a game now about a plumber who saves a princess from a giant turtle. there are too many "why"s getting in the way.

i think Master Chief suffers from FPS syndrome. despite many FPS games now containing very indepth stories, the character you play always comes across as different to the character in the cutscenes. because you (the player) takes on the roll of the main character, the way you play FPS games influences the character. much more than you playing a character you can see (3rd person) and their movement and actions are visible, and help define the character.

another genre's that have characters are fighters. but one of those characters would almost never make the list because there are simply too many of them. i know each series has only 1 or 2 "main" characters, but people who play them don't always go for the main character, they go for the one they like, and as such you might get a lot of votes for characters from a single game, there won't be many for the same character.

i hope this makes sense. it does in my head.

i'd like to see a complete list of all the options people voted for in future editions. but given it's a top 5, i don't expect this to happen.

I'd say Mario, his games are still selling well. Ontop of that, US surveys have stated Mario more well known than Micky Mouse

Its a hard choice because over the years your opinions change and what the article is about are your five favourite characters but not necessarily the five most iconic charcters. Which would make the choices a little different.

In no particular order:

* Lara Croft
* Donkey Kong
* Gordon Freeman
* Master Chief
* Dante (DMC series)

The problem with FPS characters is you play the part so its more difficult to say hey thats a character I like. Third person action/adventure/platform games tend to be more focussed on the central character.

Having said that I like the situations the two protagonists (Chief and Freeman) get put into which is what makes the characters interesting.

If you were choosing iconic characters than you know Mario, Link (or is it Zelda icon_wink.gif), Sonic would get higher nominations.
