THQ reveals new Red Faction game

PALGN News | New Stuntman, Destroy All Humans & MX out soon too.
During a recent investor conference call, THQ execs outlined the publisher’s plans for the upcoming fiscal year, with several new titles expected to be released during the period – most notable new titles being the long awaited return of the Red Faction series and Stuntman.

When queried by an analyst to list six major THQ titles to be released during the next year, CEO Brian Farrell revealed that Saints Row, Stuntman, Juiced, Destroy All Humans, MX, and – as he puts it – his ‘favourite’, Red Faction were his top choices for pushing THQ in the right direction this fiscal year.

Red Faction was an exceptional first-person shooter that first debuted in 2001 on the PlayStation 2 and PC – the sequel was rubbish mind you. The game was critically acclaimed for several reasons, but most of its praise was for its Geo-Mod technology, which allowed the player to destroy the geography in the game – a feature that was way ahead of its time. It is currently unknown what platforms the new Red Faction title will be released on.

THQ also revealed that the new Stuntman title will be released later this year for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In addition, this is also the first time THQ has talked about new titles in its successful Destroy All Humans and MX franchises.

Eager Wii fans will also be happy to hear that THQ has 11 new titles scheduled for the console during the 2008 fiscal year (from April 2007 until March 2008), one of which being a new WWE title for the Wii and the DS.

THQ has a fantastic year of software on all platforms this year, with its first major title being Supreme Commander for the PC, which is scheduled to be released later this month.

Red Faction was great, can't wait for a better sequel. I do hope that the Destroy All Humans is a next gen title.

WWE on Wii? You could do worse. I hope that they never release Leisure Suit Larry on Wii. Dead Rising could lead to some serious accidents too...

All I have to say is, Cell + Geo mod engine = Happy end!

I agree with Jabjabs. Red Faction was one of my favourites of the first-run PS2 games, and really sold me on the whole "next gen" thing. Lots of fun was had there.

As long as they don't try to copy Half Life too much, I'm excited about the prospects of the game on the PS3.

Red Faction was a brilliant premise wrapped up in horrible execution. The use of geo-mod was so scarce throughout the game you could forgive it for not existing at all, basically the idea was too big too early which is why now it intrigues me to no end.

I found Red Faction to be a thoroughly enjoyable FPS, once you got past the lack of well-executed Geo Mod areas. Now that the hardware is up to the task of dealing with it, I'd love to see a return to form for Red Faction - a true sequel possibly? (RF2 doesn't count, it was that bad)

Agreed, the sequel had virtually nothing to do with RF1. I want to go back to Mars, and be able to blow stuff up properly!

Ah red faction was a mad game, well thats my input haha!

wow, i can't believe i missed this before, and apologies for the bump.

i loved Red Faction. it's probably the only game that i don't mind using the console controllers for. the sequel had it's moments (the end was NOT one of them), but the first game was thoroughly great.

i kind of agree about the geo-mod being underused, but really only towards the end of the game, there were some damn awesome uses for it at times, using it to skip areas was pretty good.

as was using it to remove huge chunks of maps (typically bridges), especially in Multiplayer.

i actually bought it again on PC not long ago, where the memory limitations of the Geo-Mod is somewhat lessened, and entire maps can be destroyed.

Geo-mod-esque technology is still somewhat underused. i remember thinking that it looked like FEAR used it, before it eventually came out, but i really think more games should try using destructable environments.

I think I got pissed at Red Faction because I reached the point where you have a timer before things go kaboom and I kept dying, stupid timers.

was that on the space platform?

if it was, i remember it being arse also, iirc, i stopped playing it for a long time after that, came back a few weeks later and passed it first go.

same for the final boss actually. i could not beat her, i got frustrated and stopped playing. a few weeks later came back and took her down first go.

strange how things like that happen. (probably not really, it's probably more to do with being un-stressed by it all.)

I think that Red Faction is a game that NEEDS a sequel on next gen consoles.I remember when this game came out and me and one of my friends had mad fun playing multiplayer.

yeah, multiplayer in the Lobby map was great fun.
especially the first time you discover the secret rooms.

i don't really care if there's a true sequel to RF or not (i would like one), just the Geo-Mod capability on a system less hampered by memory issues (there was a limited number of "holes" you could make on the PS2. there probably was on PC too, but i never reached it).

When my friend last stayed down for a week we played multiplayer in the lobby and we made a tunnel that was pretty damn long.

I loved in RF how if you fired a rocket into the sky it would fall back down. Also what about that rocket launcher that took up half the screen, now THAT should have been called BFG.
