Krome Studios Interview

PALGN Interview | We talk to the creators of Ty: The Tasmanian Tiger.
With the release of The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning only a few days away, we thought it would be a great time to have a chat to the Australian developer, Krome Studios, about their thoughts on the Australian games industry, the situation with next-gen developing costs as well as a few other Krome Studio projects.

PALGN: With the rising costs in game development for next-gen consoles, do you think we are going to see the closer of smaller developers, namely, Australian ones?

Krome Studios: Although development for next gen is rather expensive, I don’t believe that current smaller developers will close. They may, however move into other markets. There is currently lots of opportunity for this in Australia. For example, they could move onto making games for PSP, mobile phone, etc.

PALGN: As Australia’s largest developer, do you feel there is a lack of quality titles being released by Australian developers?

KS: No, definitely not. There are a lot of quality titles being released, especially through Pandemic and Auran, though there are lots of other companies that are releasing some great games.

PALGN: Will you be attending the Australian eGames and Entertainment expo this year? If so, what can we expect to be shown by Krome Studios?

KS: Krome Studios always attempts to visit numerous shows and expos throughout the year in Australia. We are definitely going to Games Connect and expect to be showcasing our latest titles. We’re still deciding what other shows we’ll be attending as well. We love to get out there and show off our work, so you’ll definitely see us whenever we can get out.

PALGN: You’re currently developing the new Spyro game, The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning. How will it differ from previous instalments?

KS: It will be keeping true to the feel of previous installments, but will be more combat focused and will be aiming at rebooting the entire franchise.

PALGN: Current Spyro games have received average reviews from the media. Will this trait continue with The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning?

KS: No I don’t think so, though that being said if someone doesn’t like the Spyro series, they probably aren’t going to change their mind. We always like to hear what our players think though.

Spyro's back, and he's better than ever.

PALGN: Do you agree with the way the media has received the Ty and Spyro series as kid games?

KS: I wouldn’t refer to them as kid’s games; I would call them both family friendly. They are games aimed at the novice game player, for someone that hasn’t had too much game playing experience. That doesn’t necessarily classify them as kids based though.

PALGN: How is development on the Hellboy game coming along?

KS: At the moment, Hellboy is on track for release next year. It is definitely one of the better looking next generation titles. We’re really looking forward to this one.

We have also had some super positive feedback on the game, with both Mike Mignola (Hellboy creator) and Guillermo Del Tovo (film director) being extremely happy about how it looks and plays.

PALGN: We know the game will be based on the comic books, but will there also be any influence from the film, such as the cast lending their voices to the game?

KS: With the look and feel of the game, inspiration has come from both the film and the comic book. It is a hybrid mix and is aiming to stay true to both. So there will definitely be an influence from the film.

PALGN: If you had the choice to develop for only one of next-gen consoles, which one would it be and why?

KS: That question is impossible to answer. If we had to choose, then it would be the console that has the most market penetration, that way the game will be seen and played by more people. All of the three consoles are great and we would like to work for all of them!

PALGN: What does the future hold for Krome Studios outside the games we’ve discussed?

KS: At the moment we are doing some really cool titles that will surprise a lot of people. These will be announced sometime early next year. We are also working on making our games bigger and better and pushing the technology around to deliver a more enhanced gaming experience. Krome is all about taking it to the next level to move forward.

PALGN would like to extend its thanks to Krome Studios and Emma Scrimshaw for taking the time to answer these questions. For futher information on upcoming Krome Studio games, you can either stay tuned to PALGN or head over to their website.
