eGames 06: Australian video game expos in the works

PALGN News | No less than five of them, too.
With the changing shape of E3 still firmly placed in our hearts and the Leipzig Games Convention now over, you are probably wondering what's left on the table for this year besides the Tokyo Game Show in September. How about five video game expos in Australia? If you live in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth you're going to enjoy this news post.

First up is Supanova. Set to appear at Sydney Olympic Park on October 27 to 29, Supanova is largely an anime and comic affair. However, there are generally several video game publishers who exhibit. At this stage Activision and Vivendi are confirmed with hopefully more on the way.

Game1 Electronic Gaming Expo and Tournament is currently on track for November 4th and 5th at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. While Game1 is being held in the same venue as the Auto Salon expo, it will have its own space within the show. The organisers have purported that the expo will feature Australia's biggest gaming tournament – with players all around Australia able to take part.

Sydney-siders will also have the opportunity to see Game1 in action when the show comes to Sydney Showground Olympic Park on December 2nd and 3rd.

In-between the two Game1 shows will be the eGames & Entertainment Expo - to be held at the between November 17th to 19th also at Melbourne Exhibition Centre. eGames will feature keynote speakers, game distributors showing their latest software titles as well as hands-on opportunities, "eSport" competitions and even an Australian Video Games Awards event. Held to coincide with the PS3 launch, expect to see some major support from Sony.

A final games expo will be held in Perth between March 30th to April 1st 2007. The GO3 Electronic Entertainment Expo 2007 will be held at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre and feature a consumer expo, developer conference and a LAN party. While GO3 will have a strong developer focus, there will be several public exhibitor days where some of the major publisher should be showing their wares.

At this stage it looks like you’ll be able to go hands on with the Wii and some upcoming Xbox 360 titles at both Game1 and eGames. The PS3 is only confirmed for eGames.

We’ll have more updates on the details of these expos (including our picks for the must-see events) in the coming weeks.

2/5 for Melbourne isn't bad, hopefully they're going to be good. Cause Australia needs an E3 type event so we don't get forgotten anymore! icon_evil.gif

I won't consider Supanova a gaming expo if it's anything like the past years. There've been some games in the past ones, just some demos/preview, not bad, not good.
Looking interesting at the game1, but it's only Rock* and EA atm, which is a little less than a expo IMO.

We're getting the replacement for the Austrailan Game Developers Conference from memory. Not that it'll do you much good unless you're in the industry or a student trying to get in... icon_razz.gif

There was a small games section at Brisbane's Supanova earlier this year. All the big local studios were there (Krome, Pandemic, Auran, THQ, Creative Assembly) as well as a couple of the smaller ones and a stand for QANTM. I scored a Dawn of War poster from the THQ booth icon_biggrin.gif

We should all organize a big road trip check them all out. icon_razz.gif

And too bad they're not coming to SA.

Why would they, I guess.

So they know why not to go there in the future?

No, I'm trying to view it from their point of view.

There's always AVCon in SA right? That was the bigger gamey thing in oz for a while. Supernova just has booths with demos in in the past, nothing cool like special guests or panels. Unless you count the voice actor of Goku as a game guest too...

PALGN will hopefully have a presence at at least one event. More details soon.

Supanova is always a good day out. Especially fun to laugh at the cos play people. But games wise they never do much besides a DDR comp and a couple of small stalls.

Game1 seems interesting though!

I'll be at the Perth GO3 one next year, might fly over for the other ones especially if the Wii aint out.

AVCon was just a convention with a crudload of games to play, comps and stuff. Never anything 'new' per se. At least, not that I know of.

Shall be going to AVCon 2007, that's for sure. I'll dress up as Edgeworth. =P

AVCon has always just been a massive gamer-get-together. Nothing like E3 or Tokyo Game Show (mini versions that is).

If these expos are a success, I wouldn't be surprise if they make them nation wide. It would be a good move.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of these events will also be mostly comps and a few booths. The game1 one is certainly starting out that way, and supernova is a comic con with anime and gaming bits. eGames and the nebulous GO3 promise more, but we'll see icon_smile.gif

eGames epo looks sort of interesting ... need more detail about who will be there though
