EA licenses Unreal Engine 3.0

PALGN News | For "select" next generation titles.
Electronic Arts and Epic announced this morning that they have reached an agreement whereby EA will license Epic's latest version of the Unreal Engine for use in several next generation projects. Of course, none of these projects were actually named.

Paul Lee, president of EA studios commented, "At EA, we give our development teams the tools they need to make great games. We license cutting edge tools like the Unreal Engine 3 and combine them with our own systems to create state-of-the-art development technology."

"We're obviously thrilled to license Unreal Engine 3 to EA, the world leader in our industry," said Mark Rein, Vice President, Epic Games, Inc. "They have extremely talented development teams, and we're excited to see how they apply our technology to their high profile game projects."

While it's probably good news that EA are licensing a respectable engine like Unreal Engine 3.0, one has to wonder about the fate of Renderware, the middleware range developed by Criterion, which EA purchased in recent years for a sizeable sum of money. More news as it breaks.

EA (Meh.) + Unreal engine (Meh.) = quite a mediocre outcome.

*continues waiting for GTA4 and Portal with their interesting engines.*

Yay, the plastic engine gets even more games!

This is beyond ridiculous. What, EA license it and all of a sudden the Unreal 3.0 engine is unimpressive?

Till this point I have heard zero criticism of the engine that powers Gears of War, Mass Effect and Huxley. These three games offer simply put: the best graphics I have seen to date.

The Unreal Engine 3.0 will guarantee that future EA titles won't look like dog **** at the very least. But I forgot, it's EA. Any news is bad news, isn't it?

Edit: Portal uses the Source Engine.

I have nothing against EA, or Unreal Engine, but you must admit, it does have that really irritating plastic look.

No it doesn't, that's called lighting effects. It happens in real life when there is a high contrast between darkness and a strong light source and light is reflected.

Kakuto Chojin has an irritating plastic look.

Meh, meh and meh. I've never been interested in any games that use the engine, therefore my criticism is justified. The engine's alright, those games do have good graphics, but I don't care about them. I've never mentioned it before 'cause there's never been a discussion on it before.

And yeah, Portal uses Source, hence my immense interest in it.

Why, may I ask, do you prefer the Source engine over Unreal 3.0? Is it because Portal is more interesting than Gears of war etc? (I'll admit - it is)

If so, this has nothing to do with the engine at all. icon_razz.gif

Yeah, that is why really. And no, it doesn't really. icon_razz.gif My point was just that I rarely like games EA publish, and rarely like games that use Unreal 3.0, so a combination of the two would be fairly rubbish.

I have never seen a human being in life look like a toy. Unreal Engine uses normal maps which, if not manipulated in such a way that it doesn't happen, give off a plastic look.

Pessimist. icon_razz.gif

Burnout running on the Unreal 3 Engine would be more awesome than naming a bridge after Chuck Norris.

This is usually the result of shoddy programming and modelling. The character models in Gears of War, Mass Effect and Huxley in particular do not seem to have this plastic look you speak of. I'd like to give EA the benefit of the doubt.

Would these 'select' titles be the ones on the PS3? Since I recall the PS3 dev kits shipping with Unreal 3.0 in them.

I don't see why Xbox 360 games wouldn't be part as well, seeing as the three I named above are all in development for the 360.
