Easy Mode #30

PALGN Feature | It's confession time.
We’re midway through the gaming drought, and if you haven’t already noticed, I’m having a hard time coming up with compelling ideas for Easy Mode columns – to the point at which I’d rather delay publishing the article rather than posting (more) lacklustre columns. August is even worse for game releases – the only compelling new releases come out on the very last day of the month. Mind you, the budget PC release slate is looking quite nice, with the best of 2004 and 2005 starting to hit that lucrative sub-$30 price point – a good opportunity to replace that copy of Doom 3 that went missing during your move home. There doesn’t seem to be anything truly compelling (in my opinion) happening in the industry at the moment; I don’t give a stuff about the racism in games issue, have had enough of PS3 and Wii hype, and am feeling sore over the price of Nintendo shares – so this week, I decided to go a little into my personal gaming history with a confessional piece.

Matt’s Somewhat Serious Bit

Confessing to certain unglorious things is usually death to a writer’s credibility, but when one thinks that, they assume that a writer has credibility in the first place. As I have none, I have no trouble bringing you a list of my top 20 secret gaming-related shames.

20. I didn’t buy Nintendo shares when they were 10,000 yen, despite the fact I knew they were going to go up big time. There is a bit of red tape around buying shares on the Nikkei, but I have access to the resources to solve that issue – I’m just lazy, and it cost me $10,000.

19. It took me 10 years to beat Super Mario Brothers. That last castle is a whore.

18. It took me 13 years to beat Alex Kidd in Miracle World, despite it being the first console game we owned. That last castle is a whore.

..
The last levels of 8-bit games...whores

17. Despite consistently listing it as one of my favourite series, I am completely and utterly shit at Resident Evil games. The only game in the series I beat without playguide assistance was Resident Evil 4. Even with playguide assistance, the only other game in the series I have beaten without resorting to glitch cheats is Resident Evil 2. I like the series enough to own multiple copies of each game in the series, but my lack of skill is really shameful.

16. I started out reviewing games over at GameFAQs. While there was a good little community over there that helped me to evolve as a writer, my first reviews are truly embarrassing – and still exist over there today (unlike my GameCube Game Guide which disappeared without a single word from the admin). The original reason I got into writing for independent sites was actually to score free games – I just didn’t realise it’d take two years of committed, self-funded work to be able to get to that point. It wasn’t until I had a few reviews under my belt that I developed my disgruntled attitude towards the games industry’s scoring system.

15. Of all of the great titles on the SNES, the reason I originally bought one was Killer Instinct. For the most part, I still classify the Mega Drive as the better system in the recesses of my mind, despite the eventual discovery of Nintendo’s superior first-party line-up.

This is what made me get a SNES. Proof of one-time graphics whoredom.

14. For some unknown reason, I still have a soft spot for Electronic Arts, thinking that one day they might rediscover the principles on which the company was founded. I’m pretty forgiving of all the crap they produce solely for the fact that they made so many enjoyable 16-bit games.

13. Until the release of Command & Conquer: Generals in 2003, I had never beaten a single player campaign in a real-time strategy game. I really do suck at them.

12. I originally thought Street Fighter III sucked because it wasn’t in 3D. I don’t think it’s actually possible to be more wrong than I was in thinking that.

I'm sorry, Street Fighter III. I was young and foolish.

I'm sorry, Street Fighter III. I was young and foolish.

11. I like the Mortal Kombat canon – I don’t really know why since it’s become a clusterfuck since MK3, and I’ve not liked many of the new characters, particularly the additions for MK4, but I still find myself buying most Mortal Kombat games to follow the story. It helps that they’re improving in quality and they drop in price quickly.

10. I can’t bring myself to play Resident Evil 3 any more, due to the overwhelming surge of adrenaline and fear from random Nemesis encounters. With the exception of System Shock 2 and Project Zero, Resident Evil 3 is probably the scariest game ever.

9. I love Metal Gear, but I didn’t always – in fact, I’m pretty sure I thought Metal Gear Solid sucked when I first played it on the PlayStation, and thought Metal Gear Solid 2 was overrated when I acquired the demo. Now it’s totally different; it’s my third favourite series behind Zelda and Shenmue. Plus, I think that Metal Gear Solid 2 has an enjoyable story, and have never revisited the original PlayStation version of the game, though I would like to. And I always liked Raiden.

8. Of the last 15 games I’ve bought, 11 are unopened, and I’ve only beaten one. Sure, it’s as a result of being a working man and a sucker for a good bargain (timing is everything in this industry), but when you’ve gone from being a kid who’d see 2-3 new games a year to buying over 50 without batting an eyelid, you can’t help but feel ashamed. Purchasing a non-Zelda, non-Metal Gear game doesn’t really feel like an event now.

7. I didn’t get into Zelda games until Ocarina of Time – in fact, I am fairly sure that I was oblivious to Ocarina of Time's existence until the week it came out – I didn’t really know at the time that it was a big thing to get perfect 10s from all of these websites and such. The only games I’ve beaten in the series are Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker – I have trouble trying to find time to play the other Zelda games in amongst my schedule of reviewing, despite the fact I’d easily make time for a new 3D Zelda game. I feel that one of my biggest shortcomings as a writer is never having beaten A Link to the Past.

..
2D Zelda games and I just don't seem to gel.

6. I keep an Excel spreadsheet with information on every game I own, such as the date of purchase, where I bought it, the amount I paid, a quick score out of ten, whether I’ve beaten it or not, and its current location. While it started out as an honest attempt to keep track of my considerable library (friends borrowing things and not returning them – cannot stand it!), it somehow gelled with my genetic inclination towards numbers, and I now keep a rather deep statistical analysis of my game collection, and bombard the PALGN staff with useless numbers about it.

5. I never really owned a PlayStation until the PlayStation 2’s backwards compatibility component. If you want to get technical, I did own a Japanese PlayStation for exactly 36 hours in 2001, but lacked a power point converter to get it to work. I traded it and a small library of games (including the classic Street Fighter: The Movie - Real Battle on Film) for GTA3, which was banned three days later. Had I sold that copy of GTA3 then, I would have been $200 better off. Oh well.

4. I have a general bias against the original PlayStation. I didn’t own one, but had access to one and the best games on the system, but I found it really hard to try to get into the system as a whole when I finally did have access to one. The lack of texture filtering gives me a headache, games were generally of a low quality with bad frame rates, machine was prone to error, etc.

3. Forget The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 and GoldenEye 007, I bought my Nintendo 64 for WCW vs nWo: World Tour. Sure, it was a fun game, but there were many better reasons for getting the console.

Number one reason why I defected to Nintendo...and it was a fricking THQ game

2. I’m a really sore loser. I pretty much won’t play competitive multiplayer games for more than five rounds unless I’m winning or ranking pretty high. I prefer a close contest to being completely schooled – it's trauma from RTS games at LAN parties during my teenage years. Recent fighting games are becoming an exception to the rule though.

1. The most hyped I’ve ever been for a video game was for WWF Attitude in 1999. It was a culmination of several shameful things, namely being a wrestling fan and enjoying wrestling games more than any other at the time, but being hyped for a game by none other than Acclaim has to take the cake.

I counted down the days, minutes and seconds till this came out. It's no wonder I'm so jaded.

You're a sick man.

My biggest shame in the gaming world is getting hyped about games, even though I know I won't really like them and will hardly play them (because I don't like the genre/theme). GTA3 and GT3 are the two biggest I can think of. Thankfully I've learnt my leason and never purchased a sequel since.

My true secret gaming shame is just, too shameful.

So I'll go with, I thought Super Mario 64 was an RPG until the DS came out and I saw a guy giving an in-store demo of it.

I actually have quite a few now that I think about it *sweat*

My shames:

I too bought a SNES because of Killer Instinct, and the one that came with that 'Killer Cuts' CD as well. I can admit to never liking the CD though.

I probably have bought 16 games over the last month because of sales. I don't plan to play any of them soon.

I try to pretend to like Diablo.

I bought State of Emergency on PS2 when it first came out because I thought it would get banned and surge in price ala GTAIII.

I have a text doc with all my games and systems, categorized by system, PAL/ NTSC designation, and boxed/ unboxed sections. I also have a number below each subsection telling me how many games there are in each. I thought about putting marks beside each game indicating whether I'd finished the game, but then I thought about what finishing a game really meant and whether some games could indeed be 'finished'.

That's all for now.

My gaming shame:

Although being one of my most prized games ever, I have never EVER completed Mega Man X. I still have it on my SNES, and for some reason I just cannot complete it.

I have never owned to this day, a Street Fighter game (I'm gonna get a kick to the face for this).

On my N64, I used to buy some of the games because the box art looked cool.

I originally hated the Playstation brand, before Ps2, and was completely biased towards Nintendo.

And finally, I gave away my NES to family friends when I was younger. I regret that to this day.

we sold our N64 to get a PS1. someone shoot me! goldeneye...banjo kazooie...donkey kong 64...1080...so many good games i want to play again

My gaming confessions.

1. I'm a worse sore loser than Matt...or atleast I was. If I was losing at any family bbqs I'd reset the console.

2. I suck at 2D Fighters although I enjoy them for either story or character models. One of my favourite fighters is Killer Instinct (whats so bad about that icon_razz.gif).

3. Rugby League is my most played game ever.

4. The first game I ever bought was Super Mario Bros. for the NES, however I realised SNES don't play NES games.

5. I own 4 Nintendo DS's. None are currently being played currently.

6. 1/4 of my games owned are finished. The rest arn't.

7. I have only completed 2 games this year.

There are more...but I'd be here for ages.

I must admit never ever owning a Nintendo piece of equipment. Nothing, but I have owned every Sega piece, including Game Gears and 32X's, two Dreamcasts and own a Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast now.

1. After picking up a copy of Silent Hill 3 during a 2 for $50 sale at Electronics Boutique, I purchased a Sony PlayStation 2 a few weeks later.

2. The only reason I purchased Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 is because I'm a fan of the series.

3. I'm a working man and a sucker for a good bargain. I have lost count on the amount of games I have purchased and still yet to play.

4. I have purchased the Xbox version of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and the limited collector's edition of DOOM 3 twice and Halo: Combat Evolved four times.

5. I have never finished a game from the Metroid series due to my poor timing while bomb jumping.

6. I have tried several times to enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. But, just can't.

7. I hate the Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo and Kingdom Hearts series.

8. I have no intention of buying any of the three next generation consoles.
1. My favourite genre is RPG's, and yet, i can't bring myself to play one without some form of play-guide (cause it annoys me that i may miss something important, and have to start from the beginning again)

2. I'm a sore loser when it comes to most things

3. I like the Metal Gear series, but have to admit, that i experience a lot of WTF moments when i play them

4. I'm a Nintendo fanboy, and yet, have NEVER owned a NES (or most other Nintendo stuff b4 that, bar chunky GB) icon_redface.gif

5. My most hated genre is puzzles (with very few exceptions)

6. Regardless of the great gaming scores that Resident Evil games have recieved, and the pleased ppl who have played them. I have never played a game from that series (and don't plan on doing so), cause i HATE the horror genre (films expecially). If i was to play a RE game, i am quite sure you would see me wet my pants

7. When my dad used to work overseas (a couple of years ago) i had a PSX, well, cause he was working in the Middle East at the time, i now have over 100 pirated PSX games (some copies) icon_redface.gif

8. I'm a bargain hunter, without a job icon_cry.gif

9. I have never played a game from the Metroid series

10. Like i mentioned b4 i am a Nintendo fanboy but apart from Nintendo consoles i also own: a PS1, PSX, PS2 and a Sega Game Gear

11. I have a NES game (A Boy and his Blob), with no system to play it on

12. My father and i broke 2 PS2's, trying to put mod-chips in & trying to put a different color case on a chunky PS2

13. I'm a video game completionist

14. I don't see the point in sports games, or racing games unless they offer something different than JUST playing the sport, or driving around a frikin track
(eg's of stuff i do like: Mario Sports titles, Freestlye Soccer etc)
(driving games i like: Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart, plus am a sucker for the freedom in GTA)

There is perhaps some more i could later also

My confession,is that i really and truley think that games, overall, are a negative impact on my life.

Not enitirely of course, they provide alot of enjoyment too, but i feel that time spent playing games could be ebtter spent on seomthing more constructive, whether it be the gym, studies or even just socialising more with friends.

I also feel that some games are manufactured to be addictive much like how cigarettes are.Games like wow and others similiar that require so much time and money from the playe to experience it all are a chilling predicition of how games will all one day be like.

No offence to anyone who enjoys wow, your choice, but i feel that 'take everything in modertaion' is the truest saying in life. One day we'll all be middle aged men, or old granpas and think back and wonder, what the hell DID i spend the best years of my life doing?

It'snot so bad if you spent your time working, or learning or making something physical(i dunno.....carpentry),at least then you have something toshow for it.

It's very depressing to know that you have spent so much time and effort in a game, only to one day uninstall it and have NOTHING to show for the countless hours and frustrating moments you had to endure up until that point.Once upon a time diablo2 was the be all and end all for me.EVery stat and every item had to be 100% perfect, i played and played reaching for a goal that was never really there. And now,i don't play it.And what have i got to show for it.

Another Killer Instinct fan joins the fray of gaming secret shames. Not only do I love Killer Instinct I own all 3 home versions, yes SNES, GB and N64. But as much as I enjoy them I'm not particurly talented at any of them. Other Shames:

1. Except for Pokemon I hate all J-RPGs.
2. Can't stand Megaman the character or his games.
3. Own 2 car racing games yet I absolutely hate car racing. So what on earth compelled me to buy them.
4. I own over 108 games yet I've only finished about 50. I'm now on a self-imposed gaming drought and spend my money on DVDs so as not to increase my backlog. I actually mark them on my IGN list as finished with a now playing sign.
5. Don't like 2D versions of Metroid or Zelda. The only exception being Minish Cap.
6. I spend exorbidant amounts of time trying old games via downloads to try and appreciate their merits. I hate most of them and DOS games take a lot of fiddling around to work so I'm not sure why I bother.

Gaming gives good memories, and increases your level of imagination, which makes jobs with 'out of the box' thinking requirements a bit easier.

I think it's not about "What have I accomplished in life", it's about "Have I truly enjoyed my life".

Sadly that's true for me, and then you add in that I post on IGN too (their PAL boards and their Mac boards) and with 12 000 posts there, that's a lot of time not spent playing games or doing work. Granted I've been posting there for over 4 years and it's a lot easier to rack up posts on faster moving boards, but still... icon_redface.gif

It took me over 10 years to beat Super Mario lang. Dang that last level.

Your profile of gaming shames sounds similar to mine. For starters, zelda never interested me. I knew about 00t, but didnt care cause i always hated links awakening, which i played when i went to my cousins house. It wasnt untill my brother just came home one day, around may 2000, with a copy of oot. He'd got it for 40 bucks, and scince then, ive loved zelda franchises.

I will admit that the 2d adventures do bore me abit, but the 3d ones are awesome. The sense of wonder I got when I finally reached adult-hood in oot was amazing.

I also am pretty bad at gaming, and i bought mario and luigi 2 for 55 bucks from myer-grace bros, and i still havnt played past the first level, its just soooooooo boring and complicated. I almost cry when I look at the amount of money i wasted on that boring game.

Another shame of mine: I only beat Super Mario Land 2 in not easy mode this year, in that past i was too lazy to try abit harder on the game.

My shame:

I was totally addicted to WoW from the day after it opened in November 2004 through to when I went on holidays earlier this year (April 2006) for a week. For some reason when I came back I didn't really want to play again...still not really sure why, but I'm glad. Caught the train to work and while sitting at Roma St station saw a sign for gambling addicts: "Play the game, don't let it play you"..wise words indeed. Basically I played a minimum of 6 hours a day - at one stage with weekends, rostered days off and a couple of nights a week I'd put in 12-18 hour sessions.

And while this was going on I kept buying games - doom 3, half-life 2, civ4, and they just piled up on the floor because I wasn't able to tear myself away from azeroth long enough. Having a blast now playing them instead. Something wonderful about having a pause button!
