Mizuguchi fancies a Rez sequel

PALGN News | As do we, actually.
Tetsuya Mizuguchi has been teasing us yet again, dropping hints along with Q Entertainment CEO Shuji Utsumi that a sequel to critical darling Rez may be part of his future plans. For those not familiar with it, Rez was an on-rails shooter first released towards the end of the Dreamcast's lifespan. Its abstract visuals and a stellar trance soundtrack assured the game cult status amongst Dreamcast owners, though even a later release on the PS2 didn't help it sell in great numbers.

Speaking to 1UP though, Mizuguchi, who's also been behind Space Channel Five, Meteos and Lumines, refused to dismiss the idea of a Rez follow-up. When asked about a sequel, he replied simply with, "Stay tuned! [laughs] Cut!" It was then that Utsumi joined in, admitting that, "I loved Rez. But Rez was like three steps ahead of [its] time. [Mizuguchi] mentions Rez a lot, which was critically successful, but it didn't work out commercially. We talk about it, like 'Was it the right product or the wrong product?' The conclusion was that the stage was wrong, and we need the right stage to show it."

Before they do that, they'll need to get hold of the rights from Sega, who initially published the title. If they do, then the prospect of a Rez game with next-gen bells and whistles is certainly an exciting thought - as much as we loved the first game, it is starting to creak a bit, visually speaking.

Anyway, more as we get it.

This one of the only titles that has tempted me to buy a PS2. If it is coming next gen, I so hope it'll be on the Wii. icon_eek.gif

Hearing such news about a possible sequel is indescribable. I've been looking for a copy of the original Rez for ages. Has anyone got a copy of the game?

Yea, still have my DC copy. Tremendous shooter - very addictive hi-score mode, and the music is, of course, brilliant. One of the very few game soundtracks I can stomach listening to for pleasure. Doesn't half look old now, though. A next-gen version with, say, three times the on-screen action of Geometry Wars would be most welcome.

Rez is probably my favourite PS2 game ever. Play Direct Assault mode and crank up the volume and the collective experience is pure genius. Even if it only lasts for an hour.

Rez 2 for the Wii would be my preference. The freestyle controller would work perfectly for its gameplay.

Wouldn't that just turn it into a kind of on-rails lightgun game though? Not sure I'd like that...

As opposed to an on-rails joypad game???

Rez was on rails anyway.

I don't know how you played the game, but having the ability to accurately replicate mouse like control can only be a plus.

Rez was mostly about sweeping your target reticule over multiple enemies and unleashing multiple homing shots, not about pointing at one thing at a time and shooting it (which I agree, would be lightgun-esque and annoying).

Same here. Can't find it anywhere.

Great news to hear about a possible sequel.

Rez iz God.

I love my DC copy, played it to bits and just scored the PS2 version!

After 2 years searching I finally tracked down the soundtrack on Vinyl - totally lush to spin REZ into a set!!

Next up, trance vibrator!!

A sequel would make me feel very gooD indeed, though I'm not sure Mizuguchi feels the same way about Wii as many of us. The lure of a sequel is strong, Mizuguchi, my HD gen purchase is in your hands.

Go to synathesia.

From Wikipedia.org:

Trance vibrator

A "Special Package" version of the game was sold in Japan only, including a USB device called a trance vibrator, [1] which pulses in time with the music. While not explicitly marketed as a sex toy or masturbatory aid, it has reportedly enjoyed success in that area; the devices are available from various aftermarket retailers for (as of 2006) approximately $35 USD. In contrast, any USB-controlled sex toys on the market are currently being retailed for over $100. It is also noteworthy that Space Channel 5: Part 2 also works with the Trance Vibrator on the PS2.

Reverse-engineering efforts to allow the trance vibrator to attach to, and be controlled by, a PC have been successfully executed in Japan, resulting in a device driver for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
