Australian sales charts, week ending 23/07/06

PALGN News | Three new entries and a new champion.
For the second time in as many weeks, we have a new #1. Not surprisingly, it's AFL Premiership 2006, snapped up by hordes of footy fans instantly upon release - you can read the first review here. Interestingly, last week's champion, Singstar Rocks, has fallen out of the multi-format charts, and is only at a lowly #7 in the PS2 chart. Cars is still holding its own at #2, while Buzz: The Big Quiz surged back up the charts yet again, landing its #3 position. Just because Rocks is out of the charts, it doesn't mean we are Singstar-free - at #4 Singstar 80's re-emerges after some time out of the top 10. At #5 we have the first non-PS2 game in New Super Mario Bros. for the DS.

The popular Brain Training fell this week, but still holds a reasonable #6 position. Likewise, Guitar Hero lost two places to fall to #7, but has consistently been in the middle of the charts since its release. #8 is an odd one - it's the Hasbro Four Game Pack. You know, one of those budget things targeted at the kiddies. At #9 we have a new entry (despite what the icon next to it says) in the bland Over the Hedge on PS2. Closing out the charts is the re-entry of the Shrek Superslam/Madagascar double pack for the DS, making it a two console race this week.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by GfK.

DS Vs PS2: Who woulda thunk it in this age of PSP's and Xbox 360?

Yeah but look at most of the games on the list. They are non-games really. Buzz, Singstar, Guitar hero, Brain training....Who said there wasn't a market for non-gamers....

I wonder how many people purchased AFL and got home and thought, geeze this sucks...

wow, i'm shocked that Prey didn't even break the top 5 on the console specific chart, let alone the overall top 10.

i wonder if all the stocktake sales are having a negative effect on new game sales.

Must be a lot of Xbox 360s getting out considering you can only get the Wireless Fun Pack bundled with a premium console.

^ I thought I heard you can buy it for $200 by itself. Don't know if thats right, though.

that's somewhat low actually. i predict another re-re-packaging of the old Sims sh!t, a new combination of the expansions everyone already has, with a fresh new name, like "The Bathroom Chronicles" or "Yacht Club Extraordinary" as well as a barely useful Sims 2 expansion full of new lamp-shades to make your house all the more tacky being rushed to stores as we speak, just to make up for it.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – (July 27, 2006. 9 a.m. PST) – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that the popular video game franchise, The Sims™ 2, is going to the dogs—and for that matter, to the cats, guinea pigs and birds too! The company is releasing The Sims™ 2 Pets on current generation console systems, handheld platforms and as a PC expansion pack. The Sims 2 Pets will build on the celebrated The Sims 2 experience that allows players to create and control digital characters throughout their lives while determining the outcome of their relationships and choosing their destiny. Each version will feature customized content tailored to the platform.
The truth really is stranger than fiction.

Yeah, nobody would have predicted it. Espescially in Australia, where Nintendo is traditionally weak and the first Xbox did very well.
