Call of Duty 3 shots spring to attention

PALGN News | First screens for all three next-gen machines. Plus: first videos inside.
Bemoan the sheer number of World War II games all you like, but there's no denying that the Call of Duty games have been amongst the better Second World War titles doing the rounds in recent years. And as we gave Call of Duty 2 a big, fat 8.5 when we reviewed it earlier this year, we were extra chuffed to see the first shots of follow-up Call of Duty 3, which arrived today.

With the game due to arrive on all three next-gen machines (yes, even Wii), publisher Activision has graciously served up shots of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii versions, not to mention the short videos that you can download at the bottom of this article. The game will also be appearing on the original Xbox, though a PC version has yet to be confirmed.

We hear there's all sorts of new graphical tomfoolery going on in next-gen versions of the game, including some highly impressive cloth physics (developed using NASA technology, don'cha know), smoke that breaks up as objects (grenades, legs) pass through it and grass that gets authentically trampled beneath the size thirteens of your troops. That's authentically trampled - none of this fake trampling here. There's also a rather nifty-looking close-quarters fighting system now (kindly demonstrated in the second of the three videos we've linked to below), and hopefully the usual superb combat that the series has consistently delivered thus far. Should be good.

Video 1 [6.4MB] [41 seconds]
Video 2 [8.0MB] [50 seconds]
Video 3 [8.1MB] [50 seconds]

Simply click to get these started, though note that Windows Media Player is required.

Well that's interesting isn't it. The CoD 3 E3 trailer looks significantly better than these 3 videos, and to be honest the screenshots don't do much justice at all. It's still pretty nice looking though, especially with the 2nd vid, although 3rd vid is full of little glitches that I'd assume they'd pan out in the final version. It looks okay I guess, not really excited about it though, never have been with CoD games.

I thought the CoD E3 trailer was prerendered garbage.

Edit: Just had a good look at the vids. Looks fantastic, especially the CQC in video 2. Even better is that they've promised it's the same game across all three platforms, minus graphical differences.

Judging by how CoD3 looks in realtime compared to it, then it probably is. And plus there is no way in hell a game can look that good icon_razz.gif

Why do Wii games look worse than Gamecube games?

Must be an 'Activision' thing.

Not wishing to stir here, but the graphical difference between Wii and the 360/PS3, at least in this game, is, well...huge. icon_kero.gif

You're only pointing out an obvious fact which many nintendo fanboys seem to deny. icon_smile.gif

"No because the architecture is easier to program we can get 360 graphics on Wii!1111!!"

*sigh*

I couldnt care less what the graphics are like as long as it plays well.
eg COD:UO is a better game than COD2.

I also favour strong gameplay, but I do appreciate a visually attractive game also, and the graphics are an issue for many people, hence me raising the point. icon_smile.gif

^ Exactly, graphics aren't everything, but to say they're nothing is wrong. Minor differences like there are between the 360 and PS3 versions are nothing, but when the differences are as huge as they are to the Wii version, that does take away a lot of the immersion.

^especially when most games are using HDR lighting, bumpmapping, etc as a standard now. You get used to it, and when you don't see it happening in a game, it doesn't look or feel right.

Yep, then it feels fake.

I'm looking forward to COD3. When is it being released?

COD2 was a great game on 360, and I hope COD3 can make even more improvements than announced.

If anyone here was thinking cod on a wii could go toe-to-toe with a 360 or ps3 visuals wise you need a reality check :/

I'd be more into cod games if only there wasn't ths REALLY BAD bug on the pc version of the first game, which looked up all computers running ati cards on the second level.Stupid crap.

Well I know that CoD2 ran choppy for me on many levels with my 9800 Pro, but never heard of an ATI bug icon_confused.gif All I know is the optimization for ATI cards was rubbish.

I'm sure it was level 2, there was a machine gun nest 1/3rd through the stage where it would start firing on you and your squad, and at that very point, crasheroo.

Don't recall every crashing. I might have update to latest Catalysts or something before I played maybe. Not sure.
