Registered on June 29th, the trademark mentions all sorts of intriguing phrases, including "video game controller in the form of an electronic toy guitar, sold as a unit," and "stand alone electronic game machines with electronic toy guitars." Followers of gimmicky controllers and music games may recall Konami's arcade guitar game Guitar Freaks, versions of which have been released on PS1 and PS2 in Japan, guitar peripherals and all. Previously part of the Bemani series (along with Drum Mania), it seems the success of Red Octane's excellent Guitar Hero has inspired them to revive the series under the 'Revolution' name, fitting in with Konami's more recent music games like Dance Dance Revolution and Karaoke Revolution.
Konami's previous guitar games had a similar format to that used by the Guitar Hero controller, but there were some differences that would make the peripherals incompatible - Guitar Freaks had an effects knob for example. So unless Konami is working on including support for Harmonix's peripheral, it's likely they'll be foisting another pricey guitar controller upon us.
