E3 2006: Mario Hoops 3 on 3 revealed

PALGN News | DS basket-brawler looking good!
Another nice looking game to get forgotten in all the huge announcements yesterday was Mario Hoops: 3 on 3 for the Nintendo DS. While many people are sick of Mario sports games, Nintendo seems to be getting over the concept, given no Mario in sight in Wii Sports - but 3 on 3 continues the tradition of being a sports themed game rather then a real sports game. And since there hasn't been a handheld one for a while 3 on 3 may be a welcome addition to the DS library. Strangely, it's being developed by Square-Enix! The last Mario game they developed was Super Mario RPG on the SNES - could this game be the first fruits of an apparently healed relationship? Could we see another Mario RPG soon?

Apparently Mario Hoops: 3 on 3 will be controller using the touchscreen - it's not yet specified how. Nintendo says "Players use the touch screen to get their game on as they execute tricky dribbles, special passes and sweet shots – all with strokes and taps of the stylus". Right, that clears that up then, eh? You can choose your own team (of three, we're guessing) from a cast of Mushroom kingdom favourites, and as you'd expect each have their own special wacky abilities, and coins, Bomb-ombs and red shells will play some part in the game

3 on 3 will feature local multiplayer (six player, we hope), and no mention of an online mode yet but we're hoping. No release date has been set, but check the media panel for the impressive screens!

Been spending too much time on the forums there, Dave. Your italics are in the wrong kinda bracket.

I'm uneasy about the trend of forcing games into using the touchscreen to the exclusion of the D-Pad, even in instances where not only would the D-Pad work great, but possibly better (Zelda, Starfox, and now this). I hope they're more focused on making great games than in trying to validate the DS's hardware choices.

Agreed, I'm seening more and more DS games using the touch screen as the main form of control.

The site is written in the same format as the forums, it was just a formatting error.
