IEAA Australian game awards

PALGN News | What games sold the most in 2005?
Last Friday, the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia held the inaugural IEAA awards at the Sheraton on the Park, Sydney. The black-tie function's primary function was to acknowledge the sales achievements of companies in the Australian games industry, but, as it often is with these things, it was also a night of statistics and back slapping.

Market research company GFK Australia provided statistics showing that Australian game sales continue to grow: consoles game sales were up 5% (in dollars) over 2004, PC games sales grew a whopping 10%, and console hardware sales were also up 9% over the previous year. Overall, the industry took $861million out of gamers' pockets in 2005

IEAA CEO Chris Hanlon had this to say: "In a highly competitive sector, video games continue to increase share of the consumer entertainment dollar and these figures highlight the consistent year on year growth of the interactive games industry"

It is sad to see crappy games like Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith & Need for Speed: Most Wanted can be top seller.

honestly, why the hate for NFS:MW?

it's a decent game, and in all honesty, what competition was there for Racing Games on PC?

i don't see how SW: E3 - ROTS can be called an RPG though. nor can i understand how NFS:UR beat Mario Kart DS on handheld Racing game sales.

and i find Nintendogs being classified as a simulator quite hilarious.

Ep 3 is an RPG now?

The lack of competition doesn't necessarily make it a better game though...

^ i suppose, but neither does it make it a bad game.

personally, i thought it was a good game. definately one of the better racing games i've played in a while, across all formats. GT4 beat it in console sales, and that's quite deserved IMO, but for PC, i would say that NFS:MW was probably the best racing game available last year.

if you don't like the street-racing genre, that's fine, but there weren't many better made racing games released last year.

like i said, i don't get the hate directed at it. it all comes across as a label hate thing.

I agree, it's actually quite good, whatever the political implications.

70% of MKDS sales were pack-ins with new DS consoles, so they probably don't count. DS has easily outsold (and is still outselling) the PSP in australia, and Mario Kart is the most popular game ATM, so that's the only logical explaination.

I know what you mean, but what else is it?

makes sense i guess. pity though, i might like NFSMW, but i think it's quite abhorrent this is winning because of a technicality like this.

true enough, it's not that it doesn't deserve to be there, like you said, what else could it be classed as?

Typical, very typical.

Yeah, I'm quite puzzled at the hate for Most Wanted too. I believe it is because of two things really, firstly the image. It's apparently cool now to hate all things in the modifying world. Secondly would be assumption. "Oh it must be crap because it's just NFSU 2 with a name change."

As far as I'm concerned it deserved the sales it got as it was a BIG improvement on the Underground franchise. But anyway, each to their own.

Good to see Gran Turismo take a nod, fantastic game that one. icon_wink.gif

It's quite telling that the Xbox didn't even get a single nod, but then, the awards consider the episode 3 game an RPG...
