Australian Sales Charts, Week Ending 01/01/06

PALGN News | Back after a Christmas hiatus.
The one-week break hasn't exactly turned the charts upside down, with your standard big-selling franchises occupying the entire all format top 10. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is still sitting pretty at #1, with Smackdown vs. Raw 2006 just behind it. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories continues the run of the could-sell-a-million-copies-if-it-was-a-blank-DVD franchises, but the chain is interupted by Buzz: The Music Quiz at #4, which fails this criteria since it doesn't have a sequel. Yet. But, it's back to GTA at #5, with San Andreas surfacing yet again.

Ricky Ponting Cricket 2005 is continuing to have strong sales - which might, just might, have something to do with the fact it's the middle of cricket season. #7 and #8 are the same as #1 - Need for Speed: Most Wanted, but on Xbox and PSP instead of PS2. At #9 is the latest in the eternally popular Singstar series, 80s, and bringing up the rear is the newest Eyetoy game, Play 3.

So there you have it. The Australian charts, made up of three Need for Speed games, two Grand Theft Auto games, three Sony party games, a wrestling game and a cricket game. Fantastic.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by GfK.

All Consoles (full priced games)

PS2 (over $50)

GameCube (over $50)

Xbox (over $50)

PC (over $20)

NDS (over $40)

PSP (over $40)

GBA (over $30)

given that Australia is cited to be a veritable XBox Stronghold, does the ratio of XBox game sales compared to PS2 game sales reflect the ratio of XBoxes to PS2s in circulation?

Yes. There have been 1.3 million PS2s sold in Australia, and 650,000 Xboxes (and 150,000 Gamecubes). So it's 2 to 1 PS2 to XB here.

So Australia is not an Xbox stronghold by any means, but their market share here is by far their highest in the world. In the US it's about 3:1:1 and worldwide it's 5:1:1 (for PS2/XB/GCN).

i think you missed the question, though re-reading it, i can see why that was easy.

if there are 2 PS2s for every XBox in Australia, are game sales reflecting this?

it seems that week after week there are 9 PS2 games in the top 10, and only 1 XBox game, so basically, is the XBox selling medium sales across many games where the PS2 is selling like hotcakes on only a few games, or is something else happening?

it just struck me that, although the console itself sold relatively well (globally speaking) if game sales are sh!tty, it could explain our snubbing regarding the X360 launch.

^^Good theory, that's a possibility.

Wow, the Xbox is only outselling the cube by around 4:1! I thought that the cube was doing much worse than that.

It is suprising to see all three versions of nintendogs claiming top spots for the DS charts.

David, do you have any information reguarding PSP and DS sales figures?

Nah, sorry. The console figures were from the Sydney morning herald to the end of last year. They didn't say anthing about the handhelds.

Need For Speed: Most Wanted has a place in every chart? Words can't describe the visual shock.

I think snubbing Australia is just some sort of tradition or running joke myself. Actually I just made up a conspiracy theory:

Everything is released here last because people want an aussie holiday after they've released stuff everywhere else, so they combine holiday and oz release. icon_evil.gif

Xbox sales could be down for a few reasons:

* Its controversial thing to say but I suspect hard drive modded Xbox consoles may contribute to the lack of sales.

* No stand out titles. Too many FPS.

* Variety (PS2 has the best variety in gaming hands down). Looking at the top ten Singstar, Buzz, etc. Nothing like it on the Xbox.

i don't think that's controversial at all, i think it's probably a huge factor in lack of XBox sales.

as for the other points, well, it's a watered down PC with watered down PC titles.

Another reason is definatly Halo. I know many many people who have a PS2 as their main console and then paid $300 for an Xbox just to get Halo/Halo2.

What's wrong with that? icon_razz.gif

It is amazing what hype can do.

Thats probably ture, but, on the other hand, I think being able to get $5 games more than likely lead to Xbox getting quite a few of its sales.
