Australian Sales Charts, Week Ending 04/12/05

PALGN News | Most Wanted bodyslammed out of the top slot.
The Need for Speed: Underground series has always been a strong performer, usually debuting at #1 and holding the position fiercely for months. This isn't the case with Most Wanted, as it has been knocked down to #2 by Smackdown vs. Raw 2006, who has been lurking around the middle of the charts for the past few weeks. The rise of Smackdown has pushed last week's runner up, and former #1, Buzz: The Music Quiz down to #3. The first PSP Grand Theft Auto outing, Liberty City Stores, has debuted at a strong #4 - but it still has a lot of work to do if it wants to catch up with its PS2 brethren. Most Wanted makes it second appearance of the week at #5, this time on the Xbox.

Eyetoy: Play 3 has suffered as a result of the movement up the top, and it finds itself at #6 this week. Some discounting has resulted in the below-par AFL Premiership 2005 re-enter the charts again at #7, while Singstar 80s fell to #8. At #9 is the only game to have held its position this week - Ratchet: Gladiator. Remarkable any game could hold on to a position this week, considering the movement all over the charts. Finally, closing up the charts is Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

The charts are updated weekly and are provided by GfK.

Aw man, I wanted a Mario Kart/GTA:LCS head-to-head! We don't even get a GTA/Animal crossing fight up there. I'm interested to see just how many PSPs GTA can sell, I can see it becoming the big drawcard.

Especially since it didn't dramatically affect PSP unit sales in the US or UK. I've had the game since late November, and it doesn't offer up anything profoundly different from GTA Vice City (if you excuse multiplayer, it really comes across as an expanded GTA3 mission pack), which came out two years ago - are you really going to spend $399 + $89 on that? It's still a solid game, but not $490 solid.

That's really the PSP's biggest problem - it's not offering gaming experiences that are profoundly different from what's already available on the PS2. Thankfully, Sony realise this too - there's an interview with Kaz Hirai in PSM (US) where he states they're going to push for software that actually distinguishes itself from the PS2 - whether it's based on new IP or original games based on existing IP.

But by that logic Mario Kart is an expansion pack of the other Mario Karts icon_razz.gif

I'm seeing more and more PSP games being developed that I feel like playing (valkyrie profile 2, Exit, another RPG) but they're all Japan-only and not even out... The future could be better tho.

If you're talking about the Valkyrie Profile 2 scan that has been running around the net, then it isn't for the PSP, but rather the PS2.

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is its title, and it's a prequel that takes place several hundred years before the original.

I think everyone has to admit that the PSP needs some original titles. Sure, these well-known franchisers such as Need for Speed, Midnight Club and GTA are obviously going to sell, but where are the other franchisers that are Sony exclusive and are not experienced on any of console? I think Sony just didn't want to give Nintendo too much time with the market so they released the PSP so soon, which resulted in a lack of supplies and quality software to go with it. Now they're (Sony) waiting until 2006, until big named titles such as Daxter, Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy are released.

But the same thing happened to Nintendo with the DS. They released too early, and had hardly any good games. At Australia's launch, about the only good ones were a port of Super Mario 64 and WarioWare.

That's the Australia launch, which was after all the others. We were lucky to only have to be waiting for a realatively short period of time before some better games started to come out, begining with (some may argue with this) Nintendogs.

It is only now the DS is starting to build a respecitble library of games.

Ah... I misread that about a billion times then -_- Must have had PSP on the brain yesterday.

Actually it seems Valkyrie Profile is also coming to the PSP also. Despite being a remake of the original (new story content to correspond with the PS2 version). Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.

They just need another killer app and I might be sold on getting a PSP.

I see the gimmicky PS2 games rule the australian charts, therefore showing how ignorant the majority of the australian public are.

I guess that saturation advertising and a large advertising budget will sell any game.

For once, Resident Evil 4 isn't in the Nintendo GameCube top ten list.

pfft, just because you don't like a game or think it's gimmicky doesn't mean it's crap. Not everyone likes shooting things or whatever, The singstar games are fun karaoke efforts and eyetoy is a easy to pick up for non-gamers and kids.

Anyone else surprised WWE topped the aussie charts.... I mean that was something I never forsore.
Maybe I should get this game.....

Is the lack of DS games a problem or is there still a lack of stock in for MK around AUS.

I see Mario Kart everywhere. Although I can honestly say every single time I've been in EB over the past couple of weeks someone has been buying a MKDS bundle, that game sure is selling systems.

It's interesting that all the party style games are doing so well, makes you think maybe Nintendo is on to something with Next Gen.
