Nintendo's quarterly results

PALGN News | Profits down, but still in the black.
Many companies are posting their quarterly results at the moment, and Nintendo have just posted theirs. And they're not the best they've had.

Nintendo's operating profit was 3.75 billion yen*, down from 17.47 billion this quarter last year, a huge 78.5% decrease in operating profits.

Net profits were down, but better. They made 14.2 billion yen, compared to 22.64 billion last year, the drop was in part attributed to development costs of new hardware. (Yay!)

While this sounds bad, Nintendo makes its rivals' results in the same quarter look like those of Enron. Sony Computer Entertainment (the PlayStation division of Sony) reported a quarterly loss of 5.9 billion yen, whilst Microsoft's Home and Entertainment division (which makes the Xbox) lost US$179 million.

Also, consolidated hardware figues sold to date were given. Unlike Sony, who post numbers shipped (so a good percentage of their numbers are still sitting in a warehouse or store shelf), all Nintendo's numbers are sold throgh totals - so that many people have actually bought the item.

The Nintendo DS has sold 6.6 million units of hardware, and 15.8 million units of software so far. The Game
Boy Advance SP has sold 67.7 million units of hardware, and 280 million units of software, and the GameCube has sold 18.7 million units of hardware and 160 million units of software.

*At current rates, 100 Yen = 1.17 Aussie dollars = 0.89 US Dollars
