PALGN's Periodical Rumour Harvest #15

PALGN Rumour | Revolution controller unveiled?
An image has surfaced today that may reveal exactly how the Nintendo Revolution gets its name. We've managed to obtain an image of the proposed Nintendo Revolution controller, what's so revolutionary about it? It has no buttons.

While this comes as a hell of a shock at the beginning, it does make sense. Tilting the controller could count as movement, and the controller could interact with the console just through movement. If this is indeed true then the potential for "Revolutionary" games is incredible. However, how would you play Super Smash Brothers?

From what appears to be from a Russian Magazine scan, the article reads:

"Revolutionary Sender/Controller - A fully *touchable* keyboard.

It has NO BUTTONS at all. The sender/controller and gamer both recieve interact with each other through movement... this implies that not only is the game controlled through the movement of the player but all the controll itself gives some form of feedback.

The controller has built in sensors that can tell the distance between the player, and console. It has a built in microphone, and can determine it's position. (So turning the controller around and moving it in an direction would be a form of controlling)"

Is this the Nintendo Revolution controller?

Is this the Nintendo Revolution controller?

"touching is good, but feeling is better"... Hmmm? Is this the real deal? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Well When Nintendo revieled the DS and NREV, they had a japanese lady's hands, which were very nice. This hand doesn't strike me as authentic icon_razz.gif. I no that sounds really weird, but that's just what I think.

Earlier this week, the respected Japanese business magazine Shuukan Diamond reported in its 2005 Preview Edition that the Nintendo Revolution Controller will not feature a directional pad or A and B buttons.

If the news turns out to be true, Revolution would be the first Nintendo console to not feature a D-Pad and the A/B button combo. Nintendo has long said that it seeks to innovate with new control mechanisms, as evidenced by the inclusion of a touch screen on the Nintendo DS.
Given the focus of setting the A and B buttons on the GameCube controller apart from the now industry standard four-button layout, it will be interesting to see what new setup Nintendo is planning to bring to the table. ~ IGN

Old news but there is a big chance Nintendo may use touch pads - exciting idea.

In soviet Russia, game console plays you. icon_razz.gif

It certainly looks the part, but how on earth are we supposed to manipulate this thing?

I Hope they release it with something like this AND a new 'regular' controller. Then it can do everything.

Yeah, I know it's compatible with GC controllers, and while they're the best controller for current games (FPS and 3D platformers etc), the dpad is too small for it to be a primary input device (although it's not designed for that - it's for secondary input eg - for weapon switching)

The ideal revolution for me would support GC controllers, a wireless SNES controller and a new fancy thing like this, and come bundled with one of each!

Interesting...

I think it is fake though. Maybe it is real and if it is, well great. How would we play half of Nintendo's main franchises though? Would their franchises take new directions (example: Donkey Kong Country > Donkey Konga) to 'adjust' to this new controller, if it is indeed the Revolution's controller?

As usual, we'll just have to wait and see but for now I think it's fake.

Haven't heard one of them in a while now...
Reminds me of slashdot.

I hope it's something similiar to that. Sexy as! Imagine dancing around your living room with a controller in your hands and manipulating a character on screen....would be a some good ammo to fire at the "Video games make you fat" crowd!! I agree though, if the controller is totally buttonless I can see no way in which some more conventional game platforms could be played. If they release that controller and make it compatiple with the gamecube controller that would be fine. The GC controller is as close to perfection as 'convenitonal' controllers get!...exept for fighting games icon_mad.gif .....bring on the revolution. Sony and Microsoft are too concerned about money to think of things that may actually move the industry forward in any REAL way!

I'm not going to say whetehr I think it's fake or not, because I don't know the answer, so I'll just keep quiet on that.

But...
It is a cool looking thing, and I guess if it were to have pressure sensitive stuff, then maybe it could emulate the fell of buttons for conventional old games.

Or...
Maybe I'm talking a load of crap out of my...

I hope it's a different as this alleged controller - I don't want conventional gaming for the next gen - it's been done for 20 years, so it's time for progress to occur - I want something new and different and addictive as ever.

interesting...

it's certainly a new idea, if real...

i'm with Andro on this, i don't know if it's real or not, and i suppose there are just as many reason why and why not this is real/fake...

i also hope (if this is real) that the Rev ships with a "normal" controller or two as well... having an NGC controller sticking out the top is for noobs...

then again though... i wonder if the wireless NGC controllers will be instantly compatible with the Rev without need for the reciever? (ie: uses the Rev's built in reciever)

^^I really hope so, because the Rev well look all that less sexy with recievers sticking out of it.

I sort of saw this coming. I hope its touch sensitive, so you can have buttons. Otherwise it will be terrible move. How can you play Zelda with only movement, how can you race without a accelerator, etc. The design is excellent, if that face was a screen which could display any button configuration you wanted it would be aces. I reckon it should have an analog stick at any rate.

But the idea of not giving the developers a rigid controller is kinda cool. I like the thought of being able to change button layout where appropriate in the game. For example a shooter, your going around blasting bad guys, only need a couple of buttons - shoot, jump, change weapon and so on. You might then need to hack in to a terminal, change the interface to give you a number pad. Enter the number you found in that important document earlier. Hey presto your back to saving the world.

I don't know whether to believe this, sure we can just use GameCube controllers - probably what most, if not all, third party developers will do. Does make sense though, Nintendo had made various suggestions that the Rev would alienate third parties.

eww ewww ewww
A controller with no buttons is horribly horribly bad.
I feel no excitement towards that idea at all.
Why is that?

Just read all the above posts. I think it's a horrible idea. It'll be great for Nintendo's in house productions. As they'll know very well how to make use of the control. But I see third party developers being left in the dust.
How do you play 1 on 1 fighting games? How about car games? First person shooters? 3D platformers? Adventure games like Beyond Good and Evil? Action games like Prince of Persia/Devil May Cry 3/God of War/Ninja Gaiden?
The list goes on, developers won't want to waste the extra time to work out a control layout for games that are more then functional on PS3 and Xbox 360.
What we're left with is yet another console aimed at the Nintendo fanboys and children who beg their parents for games.

Also I think the Gamecube control is horrible for FPS games. Crappy tiny analogue sticks.

^ i agree to some degree...

basically it's great for inhouse games and people who make "quirky" games....

but really quite bad for "normal" games and ports...

like i said, my guess is that it will have a "normal" control pad as well, or simply use NGC controllers as well (saves development costs, and saves a portion of consumers money since they already have a NGC) but like i said, i hope the wireless NGC (Wavebird? i forget the name) is compatible with the NRevs receivers rather than needing the NGC receivers plugged in the top...

somehow i think this will be the case though...

Does anyone know what's the go with shoulder buttons on this thing? Because if X360 and (I think PS3 does) have 4 shoulder buttons, this may be a disadvantage, as you can't program in trigers.
