PALGN's Periodical Rumour Harvest #13

PALGN Rumour | Free games on the Revolution? Not yet.
Rumours have been circulating recently that suggest Nintendo will be making all their published games available FREE for the Nintendo Revolution.

How did this rumour start? Famitsu Japan published a list of all the Nintendo published games released and then combined this with Nintendo's comments about downloadable games. Combining the two of them creates some huge gaming news, however some of the information has been lost in translation. Famitsu only published a list of titles Nintendo could publish for free. In fact this is very strictly a rumour at the moment that many big name sites have fallen for.

You heard it on PALGN first, this news is false. The full list of "free" games are:

well, well, there's a turn up for the books...

it did seem kind of odd to me that they would release the games free, but i was hoping... as i'm sure many others were...

it's also kind of interesting that Nintendo never denied the rumour if it is false though... you think they'd want this nipped in the bud asap since it could cause all sorts of issues later...

(BTW: shouldn't this be non-periodical, since, and correct me if i'm wrong, the rumour harvest don't occur with any regularity... at least, they don't seem to...)

Interesting...

There is, at this present moment, no case to say either possibility is true or not.
No official Nintendo comment has been made.

As usual, we'll have to wait until the big N wants us to know.

Will be interesting to see if those Japan-only releases (such as Sin and Punishment) will be available to PAL and US gamers.

Well they make so much money from their old games, that it seems silly to just 'give' them away for free. However, they might think that this will be a huge selling point for the Rev and they will make money just from selling heaps of Rev consoles. Or maybe they won't make much money from the consoles, but if everyone has one (like PS2), you'll get more 3rd party titles etc. and this will be bettter in the long run.

Personally I'd be happy if they released one SNES/NES game a month for free and if you really want it, then you can pay to get it early.

I would say they would. Since you'd be downloading them from Nintendo dedicated servers from online services and not actually purchasing the disc or cart., or so I would assume so - since I would doubt Nintendo, and other companies, would be willing to ship out products.

So yeah, I would suspect that we'll finally get to play a lot of those Japanese and U.S exclusive titles.

Licensing issues might prevent the following from being available:

Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino and Hoppy
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Taito)
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball
Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run
NCAA Basketball
NHL Stanley Cup
Shigesato Itoi's No. 1 Bass Fishing
GoldenEye 007
Ken Griffey Jr.'s Slugfest
Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside
Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr
NBA Courtside 2: Featuring Kobe Bryant
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey

Didn't think of this before when I was all excited after reading the list. It's a list of games that could possibly be available. The availability of the above list of games would depend on the type of deals Nintendo negotiated in the first place.

This article isn't quite correct....
Famitsu never published a list of titles; they merely said something to the tune of "all Nintendo's first-party games will be available for download on Revolution" (not mentioning free). I think they may have said something about "221 titles will be available", too, I don't have a scan of the magazine.
Anyway, all the lists that have been coming out are from forum members from various places that are essentially trying to figure out exactly what these games (either first-party or second-party) are.

One thing you can be sure of, though, is that the games on Revolution are not (yet) confirmed to be free.
We also don't have a definitive official list of titles... some, like the Super Scope, are indeed Nintendo first-party, but it's unlikely we'll be seeing them on Revolution (unless the controller is so cool it can morph into a light gun on demand...).

IGN's story is correct. Please take note of the wording which it uses.

I hope these games are available for free. It would be awesome to play games like Sin & Punishment (so dissapointed it never saw release here) and some of the DD games might be interesting.

I may be wrong but Shigesato Itoi's No. 1 Bass Fishing, the Shigesato Itoi in the title works for Nintendo, isn't he the creator of the Mother franchise? Thus they put his name in the title to get it to sell better (Mother is huge in Japan).

If the games aren't free, they should sell them for like a fiver each or something. That'd be really cool. I'd be less inclined to go get an emulator, or just buy it off ebay or wherever.

Sorry; confirmation in another recent IGN story, it's not free. Hopefully everyone was as sceptical as I was about this icon_smile.gif

I'd like to see an internal online multiplayer system of some kind built into the software that emulates these old games. PC emulators can do it (badly), why can't Nintendo official ones? A smooth, well-supported online service for games dating back to SNES and NES would be a massive hit against emulation, especially if the games were cheap!

Woah woah woah woah...
IGN article wrote
Nintendo's use of flash memory rather than a hard disk was very much intentional. The company believes that kids as young as five years old will use the Revolution and could damage a built-in hard disk. Additionally, Iwata points to longevity, reliability and cost as being part of the decision to go with flash.

The internal flash memory is being used for a few areas besides the download of game classics. You'll be able to save games to the flash area, update the Revolution's firmware (adding new features along the way, presumably) and download game demos! That's right, Revolution game demos, downloaded right to your Revolution hardware.
Sorry, but this is absolute horse ****. the reason we're stuck with 512 megs of storage space is because kids might damage an internal HDD? Get the hell out! I don't know what kids have in store for the revolution, but they'd bloody smash the console to pieces before damaging a hard drive - which is ridiculous to expect. It isn't as if the things are fragile - they're built to withstand a shock force akin to droppoing it off a building, or hitting it with a sledgehammer.

And now we have all this wonderful content to download and save onto all 512 megabytes of space? That would hold about 2 game demos. Poor form.

Not really - remember that most N64 carts were around the 32mb mark. NES/SNES games will be a few MB each. Of course, it will be useless for GCN games.

Still, that is quite possibly the worst excuse for anything I've ever heard.

kinda true, while you could recover data from a dropped HDD eventually, it's actually quite easy to damage the device enough that it needs repairs in order to allow the HDD to spin properly... certainly damage them enough to stop the normal person (ie: someone who doesn't know what to do, and is afraid to simply poke it) from getting them working again...

so while the physical disc is ok, the housing (for lack of a better word) could be damaged enough that it'd take a decent some to get it working again...

i've dropped 3 removeable HDD so far in my time and 2 were rooted without pulling them apart and rebuilding the housing, this was only dropped from maybe 1.5m onto carpet (knocked off a desk)... while they can withstand jolts (being driven about, or in the case of MP3 Jukeboxes, jogging) they can't always survive being dropped...

although by saying that they are expecting 5yo's to damage the rev doesn't bode well for trying to shake the kiddy image Nintendo already have... (not saying they should completely shake it, but if the safety of data is dependent on 5yos, it's a bit crap imo)

Don't forget that the Revolution is a lot smaller than the PS3 or Xbox 360. It's capable of being carried around the house by these young people, and also since it's smaller all the internal parts will not only be more tightly packed, but also closer to the edges of the device and more susceptible to shock.
Nintendo's aiming for another drop-proof product, I think icon_smile.gif

Yeah, bit of a mistake mentioning that one of the core design features was to accommodate 5-year-olds... doesn't exactly do much for Nintendo... icon_lol.gif

Storage space won't be anything like a problem for NES, SNES, probably even N64 games (depending on pricing), but I wonder how large Revolution game demos are going to be. When the final game is around 9GB, I wonder how they're going to go about compressing part of it down to 64MB or less (what I'd consider a suitable size for a 512MB Flash card)?
Ah well. icon_kero.gif

(You're not "stuck" with that amount of storage space, BTW... you can buy standard Flash cards to act as expansions, though it's not an ideal solution seeing that it costs money icon_razz.gif
Still, Revolution'll be cheaper than Xbox360 or PS3 anyway, so I guess you could say it just evens out. icon_kero.gif)

Yeah, I was talking about Revolution Demos.

Thing is, they shouldn't make the console child-proof at the expense of storage space. I imagine if an internal removable HDD was used the rest of the console would absorb most of any shock, and even then we're talking about a very rhobust piece of hardware. If anyone provides enough shock force to break an internal harddrive inside a console, they pretty much deserve to have it break on them, as they can't possibly be trying to do anything else.

Not ruled out... the games on that list are just the Nintendo-published ones, but as far as I'm aware Nintendo are trying to get third-parties to distribute their old games on the service too. icon_kero.gif
(Can't see why they wouldn't do it... easy profit for them I'd have thought icon_kero.gif)
