The game is set to come with modes ranging from Campaign, Trial, Free Battle, Survival and Combat. And whilst much of those will sound familiar to fans of the series, there are plenty of new features being introduced, thanks in no small part to the host of unique capabilities the DS offers.
For example, the game's 'tag battles' - themselves a new addition to the franchise - look set to utilise both of the handheld's two screens, with the two COs on their own screen, allowing the player to switch between COs during battle with ease. Away from the tag mode, the top screen looks set to be reserved for unit information, land data, missile countdown and other such intel, while the bottom handles the battles.
Furthermore, each CO is now said to come with a 'Tag' stat, indicating how well they work in conjunction with other COs in tag battles. There's even a sprinkling of new units, including a stealth fighter and an aircraft carrier. Alas, there's no word yet on multiplayer or online functions, though we'd eat our hat if Intelligent Systems failed to include at least a four-player wireless option.
Anyway, until May (when the game looks set to form a key part of Nintendo's DS showing at E3 2005), PALGN advises looking at the five screenshots to the right, and watching this space.
