Rumour: Fumito Ueda leaves Team Ico

PALGN News | A legend walks his own path.
The rumour mill is abuzz today, thanks to Eurogamer, with talk of famed creator of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Fumito Ueda indicating the developer has left his parent company Team Ico.

Known best for the aforementioned titles, Team Ico's current project, the hotly anticipated The Last Guardian, has seen several unexpected delays and remains without a solid release date. If this rumour is accurate, then Fumito Ueda's decision to leave the team is cited as one of the numerous reasons behind stalling development.

According to the rumour Ueda has expressed full intent of staying on the The Last Guardian project, working alongside Team Ico, to see the game to completion, working under a freelance contract. Once completed, whenever that may be, it appears Ueda intends to branch out into more personal projects, no longer bound to any particular publisher or studio.

As always with these sorts of things, Sony has refused to comment on the rumour, though we'll likely know more about Ueda's position at Team Ico and relationship with Sony in the very near future.

It's looking more and more likely that this is true. He seemed to have had a pretty privileged position at Sony, so I wonder what he's going to do after.

Eh, Sony has given Ueda and co a ridiculous amount of freedom and financial support, and the guy has had nothing to show for six years of hard work. I can only assume the game is halfway between here and development hell, the guy is getting on, a perfectionist, and is probably tired of the stress and frustrating of working on projects like these for so long.

Assuming it's true, that is. No idea where he'd end up, so I can only assume indy. Nobody else is going to give him as much freedom as Sony has.

And now The Last Guardian's executive producer, Yoshifusa Hayama, has resigned to join a new studio called Bossa. Additionally, Sony has put a gag order on the whole company in regards to discussing Ueda's current position with Team Ico/Sony.

I'd take that as more or less confirmation he's gone.
