Halloween 2011: Fear for Free

PALGN Feature | Take on fear this weekend.
No doubt the more social ones reading this article have already been invited to various Halloween events, but for those of you stuck at home alone and looking for scares without breaking the budget, we give you a list of ten of the finest horror games money can’t buy. You know, because they’re free.

Please note that these games have mature themes and are not suitable for younger players.

Gretel and Hansel

Part 2: www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/550407
Type: Flash browser game

Sure, fairy tales were born scary, but Flash game duo Gretel and Hansel takes it to a whole new level. As Gretel, you’re still trying to get back home, but expect no help from your brother Hansel. Also expect to deal with giant spiders, not-so-cuddly bears and creepy melting ice statues. The games are lovingly crafted, featuring hand-drawn graphics, which somehow adds to the feeling that something in your childhood is slowly being corrupted. Oh, and did we mention that you can get achievements for viewing Gretel’s various deaths?

Ai To Yuuki To Kashiwamochi (Love, Courage, and Leaf-Wrapped Rice Cake)

Type: Downloadable game for Windows

If you read our Halloween article last year, you may remember Irisu Syndrome, the Japanese game that looked like it was about a cute bunny girl but held a very dark secret. From the same creator comes Ai To Yuuki To Kashiwamochi(or in English, Love, Courage, and Leaf-Wrapped Rice Cake). It’s a tough-as-nails puzzle game that requires you to match four candies in a row wrapped up in the guise of a love story. The girl, Ai and the boy, Yuki... they’re way too young to have a relationship, right? Yeah...

And while we’re on the topic of games you may recall from last year...

Type: Downloadable game for Windows

... Do you remember Yume Nikki, the game in which you explored a girl’s dreams? If you liked that then you’ll like .flow, a fan-made spin-off with the same gameplay. The atmosphere in .flow is much darker though – if you thought parts of Yume Nikki were frightening, you haven’t seen the worst of it yet.

Type: Flash browser game

There isn’t much to say about Covetous except that it’s a short little Flash game about the desire to exist. Collect the shapes and follow the tale to its horrifying conclusion. Note: Strong language warning.

The Ugly
URL: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/284306
Type: Flash browser game

“Where's your mother? Where's your father?” It’s with these words that one of the most disturbing flash games we’ve ever played begins. Forget ghosts, zombies and demons – The Ugly presents a very different type of terror. This is a no-holds barred look at a home invasion. As a young girl returning home from school, keep your wits about you as you try and discover why your home seems so... dead. You see that disclaimer up there telling you that certain games have mature themes? With its graphic depictions of gore and sexual situations, this is definitely one of them. PROTIP: Don’t make any noise.

Viridian Room
URL: http://www.fasco-csc.com/works/viridian/index_e.php
Type: Flash browser game

Viridian Room is not your average room escape game, and it’s not just because there are no batteries or screwdriver either. You’re trapped in a tiny room with a skeleton under a blanket and a very tense atmosphere, heightened by the eerie noise which plays every time you discover something interesting. Also unlike most room escape games, the story behind this one is rather spooky. Not an outright horror game, but worth it for a chill down your spine.

The Visitor
URL: www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404463
Type: Flash browser game

In The Visitor, you are a little parasite that has crash-landed, presumably from a distant planet. In order to survive, you need the blood and flesh of the living creatures on planet Earth... lots of it. Use logic to figure out how to get to your prey. The best lesson learned from this game? You should probably set up an electric barrier around your home.

Mondo Medicals
URL: http://www.charliesgames.com/cactus/mondo.zip
Type: Downloadable game for Windows

In Mondo Medicals, you set out with the very noble goal of curing cancer in mind. It doesn’t take long for warning bells to start going off though – there is something seriously wrong with the research facility. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what is so creepy about Mondo Medicals. Is it the low-res graphics? Is it the bizarre rants that play at the beginning of every stage? Or is the counterintuitive gameplay? Is it all of the above? Nevertheless, it’s something for puzzle fiends to enjoy.

Episode 2: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Lutgames/darkness-episode-2
Episode 3: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Lutgames/darkness-episode-3
Type: Flash browser game

The Darkness trilogy seems to take a leaf out of the J-Horror book, as all three episodes feature a pale girl with long hair stalking corridors, appearing in mirrors and, well, doing vengeful ghost-ly things. The first and third games are more akin to traditional point-and-click room escape games, but the second one sees you finding places to hide from the ghost ala Clock Tower. A great series worth checking out.

Haunt the House
URL: http://www.kongregate.com/games/SuperFlashBros/haunt-the-house
Type: Flash browser game

Oh come on, you didn’t think we’d let you spend your weekend scared out of your mind, did you? That’s why we’ve given you this little remedy, known as Haunt the House. You play as a cute little ghost (who is far from friendly, for the record) who is trying to scare all the visitors in the house way. Scare them, but scare them too much and they might end up doing something stupid. Just remember, if any poltergeists haunt your home, they probably aren’t as cute as this little guy.

We’re always on the lookout for scary games, whether it’s Halloween or not. Have you played a good one lately? Particularly enjoy any of our suggestions? Let us know in the comments! And stay away from those shadows...
