Sony Computer Entertainment acquires Sucker Punch Productions

PALGN News | Sony becomes a little more inFamous.
In a move that is bound to please many a Sony fanboy, news overnight has revealed that Sony Computer Entertainment has added long-time partner Sucker Punch Productions to its expanding list of Worldwide Studios; purchasing the highly regarded developer.

This means that the creators of the top selling Sly Cooper and inFamous franchises (which have reached a combined sales figure of more than seven million units worldwide) will now be developing for Sony platforms exclusively, from this point forward. Financial terms of the arrangement have not been disclosed.

“Sucker Punch Productions is one of the most highly acclaimed development studios in the industry and we have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the company for over 12 years. We are delighted to officially welcome them to the SCE family,” says Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE WWS. “The addition of Sucker Punch to SCE WWS reiterates our dedication to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform. With one of the strongest exclusive software lineups in the PS3’s history, combined with the diverse, innovate content in the works for PlayStation Vita, consumers have a lot to be excited about this year.”

Brian Flemming, managing partner at Sucker Punch shares Mr Yoshida’s sentiments. “We’ve enjoyed an incredible relationship with Sony that has allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms. As a part of the Sony Computer Entertainment group we look forward to introducing more innovative content and providing consumers with exciting, new interactive experiences.”

This is great news for Sony fans, but a crushing blow for any Microsoft or Nintendo fans quietly hoping they would get a taste of some Sly or superhero action at some point.

Have any of their games actually been released outside of a Sony console yet? Doesn't seem like much of a change in terms of releases, although it's good for the Devs at Sucker Punch that they will probably have increased job security.

Their debut game was on the Nintendo 64, but every title since then was on a Sony platform.

To be honest, I though they were a Sony owned studio.

For better or worse, I get the feeling that our chances of seeing an inFamous 3 have just increased. In any case, it looks as though Sly won't ever be jumping platforms.

I feel this is more confirming in the books what is already a reality.

Sony has great 1st party exclusives. I'm happy they're continuing the trend to be honest.

Insomniac isn't a Sony studio. In fact they are releasing a game next year on the PS3 and 360. I think that Sony bought Sucker Punch because they might have thought that they would be the next to go multi-platform.
