Mass Effect animation planned for 2012

PALGN News | Shepard-san? uguuu...
BioWare's Mass Effect belt has notches for games, comics, books, and a planned feature movie, and now it can add an animated film too, with the news coming courtesy of VG247.

Not to be confused with the feature film in works at Legendary Pictures, this deal comes as a joint venture between EA, BioWare and the FUNimation company. Already under production, the animated feature is planned for a digital and media release sometime in 2012, interestingly after the final Mass Effect trilogy game has been released.

For what it's worth, FUNimation's distribution of anime in the United States implies that this Mass Effect project will likely be animated in Japan. However, this does not imply it will meet a traditional Japanese animation style, as many of FUNimation's distributed films instead use computer generated animation.

What the ****? Anime Mass Effect?

do not want

There are some great animation houses up in Canada that could do some amazing things with the license.

I am so **** sick of the animation industries **** obsession with anime it's ridiculous.

I agree though, over anime.

Dead Space animated (which were poor) now this!

Sounds like EA pushing these things more than Bioware!

Stop milking this EA. Folks will get fatigue from too much ME.

I suppose I should wait untill I see who is actually making the animation but it still pisses me off.

I mean **** why not get Mainfraim entertainment (Now Rainmaker I think?) They're an awesome emmy award winning canadian animation firm that have a history of not only making awesome shows (Reboot, Beast wars) but working with games (having done work for Prototype, Wet, The Ghost Busters game etc)

They would seem like an obvious choice. Not only would you be hiring a well respected animation firm that could prodcue an awesome show/film for the game. But more importantly they'd be giving local animators work.

Im a great fan of both anime and Mass Effect. Anime (true japanese anime mind you, not the american try hard companies that do very litte to come close to the producing real quality work).

So the idea of a japanese animation studio working hand in hand with Bioware to produce a quality product is quite exciting for me. That is to say if a company like "Madhouse" that produced quality anime like Claymore and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for example was invovled.

But we live in a world that doesnt grant requests like that. One look at the abominations that were the "anime" reditions of Halo, Dante's Inferno and Dead Space.(i use that term anime here with great misgivings)

Each time we saw the companies that gained the licencing rights to these titles, you know they were looking at dollar signs instead of wanting to honor the game title and its fans, with a work of art that would compliment the gaming experience. (im a great fan of watching an anime version of a game for a few episodes, and then kicking butt in the game straight after it....i enjoyed doing the same after reading Drew Karpysyns novels and going back into the game for another play through.)

So it can be done successfully! But often is not executed that way.

Bioware has inspired me as a company that would not let thier product be demeaned in this way, so im willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but i was not impressed much with Dragon Age 2 so perhaps they are beginning to rest on thier laurels. That would be a shame for one of the few non japanese game companies that i have noticed create games with integrity.

Oh, and im talking about RPG games Benza so please dont bite my head off ok? icon_smile.gif But i know im hoping a little too much so let it rip.

Dead Space wasn't anime, it was done by Film Roman from Calafornia. There the people that do the animation for The Simpsons and Family Guy, King of the Hill etc (As well as Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes wich is amazing and everyone should be watching it)

Also totally don't mean to bite your head off but I'm probably going to come off that way, don't take it personally though.

I would argue that in terms of writing and characters a lot of western studios are putting out stuff that surpasses anything Japan is currently putting out. Japanese anime is constantly melodramatic to the point of absurdity with characters that come off as a list of items from TV Tropes rather then actual characters. Even stuff like D, while beautifully made is still full of this overly dramatic wangst that seems to premiate so much anime. It always comes off to me like the animated equivilent of purple prose. Of course there are the exceptions but I doubt with the subject matter that it would avoid that.

The japanese story telling sensibilities just don't mesh with what Bioware are putting out, the only way that they'd get something true to the source material here is if they go the batman: gotham knight route and have it written by the ME writers.

And if there doing that what hte hells the point of even getting it done as an anime? There are some great animation houses in Canada and America, with some incredibly talented people working at them. I mean when you have people like Tartavosky who should be free now that Titan has been canceled, it seems needless to go to Japan to get it done.

There was a little snippet of a cartoon playing in the security office of Donovan Hock's mansion in Kasumi's DLC mission. It just seemed to be a Krogan in some sort of gunfight. I thought they should have called it...

well the ME facebook thingy seems to think it'll be anime, not just made by an anime company.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I think it has a better chance of turning out well than the movie does, anyway. Hopefully we'll see a trailer soon, so that we'll have an idea of what we're in for.
