#10 Murray the Skull from Monkey Island series
Perhaps the coolest skull in existence, Murray knows how to spike fear into his enemies. Although without the aid of a body, his fearsome rolling and laughing abilities are truly a sight to behold. Technically not really a sidekick to Guybrush Threepwood, Murray is more of a doomsday sayer and advice giver to our hero (if you can call Guybrush that). But he certainly is one of the more memorable skulls in videogame history and places nicely in our Top 10 list.
#9 Daxter from Jak & Daxter series
Sure Daxter borders on the annoying side, but as far as cheesy comic relief goes, Daxter isn’t bad at it. With his witty comments and his constant desire to pick up the ladies, he’s ok in our book. Although he doesn’t really contribute throughout the three Jak adventures, apart from pointing out the obvious, it certainly would have been a boring journey without him.
#8 Falco from Starfox series
Think “Iceman” from Topgun. That’s probably the best way to describe Falco. Always cool in a tough situation, you can always depend on him bail you out in a bind. You can see why Fox loves the guy, and as far as giant roosters go, Falco is right up there. Certainly more helpful then that annoying frog Slippy, who unlike “Goose”, will not die.
#7 Rush from Megaman series
Well there had to be a dog in the list somewhere, and what better selection then Megaman’s faithful canine sidekick. Battling Dr. Willy’s psychopath robots is never easy, but luckily for Megaman, Rush tags along for the adventure with his crazy ability to turn into er…ledges. Always a great sidekick trait we say.
#6 Auron from FFX
Auron is perhaps one of the coolest and hardest characters from the Final Fantasy universe…on the side of good. He's actually dead and hangs out with the sickly happy Tidus and his moaning girlfriend, which makes him a well deserved entry in this list. With his awesome sword, never-say-die attitude and grumpy demeanor, he is truly one of the more memorable sidekicks and slots nicely into #6 on our Top 10 list.
#5 Knuckles from Sonic series
Knuckles has always been the tragic character in the Sonic series and our heart goes out to him. An echidna whose job is to basically to guard the chaos emeralds for eternity; a lonely life indeed. But it’s not all that bad, as he finds his groove and teams up (many many times) with Sonic for a laugh. As compared to his fellow cast numbers (Big the Cat, Tails, Shadow and Amy), he the most normal of the bunch (that includes voice acting as well).
#4 Max from Sam & Max: Freelance Police
Coming from one of the most bizarre and creative games of all time, Max certainly is something special. Looking like something out of your worst nightmare, a crossing between a rabbit and a mad clown, his crazy comments and zany antics are fun for the whole family. Well, family members under the age of 18 anyway. We have all got our fingers crossed for a sequel in the near future, so Lucasarts please give us more Sam and Max!
#3 Cortana from Halo series
Who better to be your sidekick as you fight hoards of evil aliens then a blue hot AI chick? Although only an AI, she certainly knows how to rough it with the boys and chucks in little comments and sexual innuendo towards her troops. Now that’s troop moral! You just know Cortana and the Master Chief are eventually going to have a fling in Halo 7 (coming to “Xbox 4” in 2012) so that’s certainly something to look forward to.
#2 The “shotgun” from many games
Although you cannot really class a Mr. Shotgun as a living entity, "he" certainly deserves his kudos. Potentially one of the most enjoyable weapons ever to grace the videogame world, when times get tough you know blast from him and your home. A special mention must go to Mr. Shotgun, more glamorous yet less satisfying brother, Mr. Rocket Launcher.
#1 Yoshi from Mario
In all honesty, Yoshi isn't perhaps as cute as he may seem. Bent on filling his stomach, Yoshi teams up with our hero Mario, well let’s face it, to eat and stomp things. Nether-the-less, loyal to our plumber, he stands with Mario against the foes in the Mushroom Kingdom and I know I'd rather have a hungry dinosaur next to me then my black sheep wimpy brother. Yes Luigi, this means you.
Honorable mentions: Murray and Bentley from Sly series, Red XIII from Final Fantasy VII, Clank from Ratchet and Clank series, HK47 the Protocol Droid from Knights of the Old Republic.
We hope you enjoyed this article. Remember this is just one writers opinion, so if you have something to say feel free to express yourself in the forums. Stay tuned to PALGN for the exciting, yet tragic sequel, "The 10 worst videogame sidekicks characters of all time".
