EveryonePlays: The Final Petition Count

PALGN Feature | Auditors give the nod.
Hi All,

After a number of weeks of counting and rechecking the PALGN / EveryonePlay’s and GAME petition calling for the introduction of an R 18+ classification for video games, the auditors at BDO have presented us with the official final petition count.

Our petition received more than 89,000 signatures in a very short period of just 8 weeks. This marks the largest 'wet signature' count in Australian history. This surpassed the previous November 2005 WorkChoices 'online' petition record of 85,189 signatures.

You can take a look at the official count from BDO auditors here: http://www.game.com.au/18PlusRating

Many thanks to all those who lent their name to this important project, and congratulations on the fantastic result!

Best,

Roland

No stalemate. And, yes, more progress to report. The Federal election stalled a number of initiatives; for example, announcement of the Senator who will table our petitions, noted as follows - http://www.game.com.au/18PlusRating

In the past couple of days mainstream media has been paying higher than average attention to the issue, largely in support for an R18+ classification as well.

I find it hilarious that we're probably going to get an R18 rating just in time for it to be irrelevant and out dated by waves of un-rated user created content.

Congrats to all the GAME store managers that signed it with a different name on each page.

I'm curious why Laura Parker from Gamespot didn't quote our petition...? Hmmm - ? Could it be that it was not driven by Gamespot but rather by PALGN.

She goes on to say, "It appears gamers have now done everything they can. It is now up to the non-gaming Australian public to voice their opinion..." Not quite true - we didn't get over 89,000 signed petitions without appealing to non-gamers.

Brendan O'Connor - Minister for Home Affairs wrote
"We need a classification system that protects young minds from any possible adverse affect, while also ensuring that adults are free to make their own decisions about what they play, within the bounds of the law," he said, adding: "I'm keen to proceed with making this important decision, based on solid and robust evidence."
It is being reported that the Gillard government appears ready to support an R18+ classification for video games following the release of a review indicating there was inconclusive evidence that there is a link between video games and violent behaviour.
