Speaking about the development of new intellectual properties, particularly his history with Capcom and the studio Clover, he stated he did not regret the creation of these new IPs (such as Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and God Hand) with the studio, but had learned that you cannot simply create titles that just make you happy personally. Instead, games need to be developed with the intentions of impressing and exciting gamers, with a good framework being to explore a currently popular genre and enhancing it with your own original ideas.
The studio's upcoming action shooter Vanquish is an example of this. When asked why Vanquish appeared to be more of a 'Western' game than many other titles for the studio (such as Bayonetta), Inaba clarified that the studio does not go into game development with particular cultural influences and design philosophies in mind, and that the perception of Vanquish was likely due to the shooter genre being considerably more popular in the West than it is in Japan. He mentioned that in Japan the shooter genre is so unpopular that many Japanese gamers are unaware of major shooter franchises popular in the West, and that Japanese gamers traditionally do no practice the habit of importing foreign titles, something Western gamers are more open to.
When asked about the lack of mutliplayer components in current Platinum titles, as well as future games, Inaba confirmed that the studio was developing an unannounced major multiplayer game. Also, the studio would not completely focus on big titles like has been seen with Bayonetta and Vanquish, and would still continue to explore titles with shorter development titles, such as MadWorld, a game he noted ran into issues with development time and resource management.
Vanquish is due out later this month on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. While we wait, why not post your speculation on Platinum's multiplayer title in our comments section?
