Gaming news is literally changing hourly and obviously the pressure is on us to deliver it as soon as possible. This can often mean that we miss out on delivering our own personal opinion on some of the issues surrounding gaming. So, without delay I thought it was time that I delivered my take on some of the issues surrounding gaming and PALGN.
Reviews and Review Scores:
Everyone's a critic... Unfortunately, due to the amount of traffic we get to this site nobody is ever going to agree completely with the scores that PALGN gives out. We've previously ranted about this but I think it is essential that i bring the issue up again. I am specifically looking at World Rally Championship 4 which i recently reviewed. Along with the review came a plethora of people who wanted to fuel the debate of Colin McRae Rally 2005 Vs World Rally Championship 4.
Reviews are purely subjective and are ONE person's opinion of a game. We generally try to take the interests of all our readers into account and personally i found that Colin McRae Rally 2005 was a better title than World Rally Championship 4. There is no right or wrong to this issue though, however, Gamerankings seems to agree with my contention.
If you don't agree with our opinion then that is completely understandable, but please take into account the fact that everybody has different tastes and every one of our staff members have different opinions.
PSP Australian Price:
Sony recently surprised the hell out of everybody by announcing a ridiculously cheap price for the PSP launch in Japan in December. This has everybody in other regions speculating on the price point when the PSP eventually comes out in other regions.
The following can only be taken as pure speculation but we would assume the Nintendo DS will launch in Australia at $199.95 and the PSP at $249.95. So what difference does $50 make? Well, not much, especially considering Australia's apprehension to anything Nintendo related. The pressure is seriously on Nintendo to include a pack-in game (Super Mario anyone?) or drop the price by another $50. As it stands, the only thing which could stop Sony is the battery life issue...
What about launch dates? Neither company is releasing any information and not responding to any speculation, it would be fair to say the Nintendo DS will have a respectable launch in Quarter 1, 2005 and the PSP will see the light of day in Quarter 2, 2005.
One thing that fans of either handheld seem to be forgetting is that either way gamers win. The Nintendo DS has meant Sony are going to be releasing a handheld at a ridiculously cheap price and there are bound to be some brilliant games on offer for both handhelds. Fighting about which company is going to win isn't going to make the company win so it is kind of pointless. One thing is for sure and that is that PALGN will be covering both platforms so don't worry.
Resident Evil 4 going to the Playstation 2:
Just to add fuel to the fire, we've also heard it will be making a cameo on the XBox soon as well...
Resident Evil 4 is going to be a graphical showcase for the Gamecube despite this announcement. The only way to play it for about nine months will be on the Gamecube and then Playstation 2 gamers will have their chance. Nine months is a ridiculously long time to wait for a game (Can you imagine waiting until August, 2005 for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?)
We doubt many people are going to hold off for an inferior version of the game, we are glad more people will be able to experience the inevitable greatness of Resident Evil 4 though. Playstation 2 gamers cannot complain either as they will be getting Devil May Cry 3 to tide them over in February.
N-Gage Vs PSP Vs DS:
Do people still remember the N-Gage? PALGN covers the N-Gage and we really haven't had much material to cover in the past few months. With two weeks and a half until the Nintendo DS launch in North America we were kind of expecting Nokia to reveal a lot of games or another hardware update.
Unfortunately, our expectations were too high and so far we're yet to see many announcements from Nokia. Could they be conceding defeat already? Some of the "big" games coming out for the N-Gage in the next few months include SSX: Out of Bounds, Pathway to Glory, FIFA 2005 and Urban GT.
This isn't exactly a stellar line-up but it is better than nothing. As it stands at the moment, the N-Gage is more expensive than the PSP and the DS look to be launching at, so a massive price drop will be needed for the N-Gage to stay in the game...
That's it for our little rant, but keep checking back to PALGN as we will have them as we see necessary. Feel free to add your comments on any of these issues in our forum.
