E3 2010 Feature: PALGN Staff E3 2010 Hopes and Dreams - Part 1

PALGN Feature | PALGN's staff share with you their E3 wishes.
Ahh, E3. The ‘Electronic Entertainment Expo’. A special time of the year where gamers worldwide group together, hold hands, sing around a fire and make beaded jewelry. Okay, for some it’s an excuse put on the fanboy goggles and begin the battle of list wars. Either way, it’s a big event for all gamers, will developers big and small gathering together under one roof to delight us with announcements and surprises from our favourite franchises, hardware platforms, and even some new intellectual properties.

Like all gamers out there with their hopes and dreams, we too have titles and surprises we’d like to see make an appearance at E3, and over the course of two features we’re going to share them with you. So read on, and see what PALGN staff are looking forward to at E3 2010.

E3 2010 is the Wrestlemania of all the video game press events, it’s the event where bomb shells are dropped, lucid promises are made and beautiful women tell us how the controls of a game work.

Being a tragic Sega fan, I am looking forward to what they will have on display this year. Sonic the Hedgehog looks to make a triumphant return this year, and yes I know we’ve been through this empty hope each and every year but this time it’s for real...like seriously!. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will be in playable form and I am looking forward to some detailed hands-on impressions from our editors who are going to attend this event. The recently announced Sonic Colours will also be playable form and I hope that it will surprise us all by actually being good! Surely coloured pixie like creatures cannot be worse than a werehog.

Anubis being dead is hardly an excuse, Konami.

On the Nintendo side of things, they got a really good lineup. Looking forward to see and learn more of Metroid: Other M, Golden Sun DS and Pokemon Black and White. Really excited to see some more concrete details on the upcoming Wii Zelda game, Twilight Princess was a fantastic game but at the end of the day it was a port of a Gamecube title, so this new Zelda title will be the first true one for the Wii and I hope to see something amazing and extraordinary. As for the technology that will be on show, I am not to fussed about the Wii vitality sensor but I have high hopes about the Nintendo 3DS, I can actually imagine this working out really well.

Other worthy mentions for me are The King of Fighters XIII, Deus EX: Human Revolution and The Last Guardian, looking forward to some new media and hands on impressions. However, if I could state one thing I really dream and wish to see in E3 2010, it’s that I hope Konami finally unveil Zone of the Enders 3. We have seen far too many Metal Gear games over the past few years, the ZOE series was amazing on the PS2 and I believe it truly deserves an outing on the current consoles.

Having seriously followed gaming for just over 10 years, I finally have the opportunity to actually attend E3. To say that I’m ‘pretty excited’ doesn’t even come close to covering it. However, there are two things that I would really like to see at this year’s show.

Firstly, I would like to see a return to form. The E3 of the early noughties was all about the new and exciting, until it got too bloated and crowded. The ‘more intimate’ affairs of 2007 and 2008 were so subdued, that you wouldn’t know they were on, and so guarded that there was hardly anything was shown, let alone anything new. While the return to the more traditional format in 2009 still seemed a bit conservative, it made a lot of the right noises. Hopefully this year, without any new console announcements on the horizon, will be one for new games, partnerships and innovations.

Secondly, I would like to have a reason to believe in motion control. The only game I’ve found so far to be enhanced by motion control from a gameplay perspective was Red Steel 2, and that was once it was enhanced with Wii Motion Plus. Now that Sony and Microsoft are joining the fad, surely we’ll be able to find out once and for all whether motion control will truly impact on the way we play, or whether it’s just fodder for the masses. I’d like to think that E3 will show my something that will let me believe that gaming has a future beyond a traditional pad, but I won’t be surprised if I don’t either.

I’m not going to lie; there is one game that I want to see at E3 above all other games. This game is a sequel to my favourite game this generation and while a sequel has been confirmed, absolutely no details have been revealed about it. Of course the game I am talking about is Mirror’s Edge 2. No amount of glory filled text can explain my hopes and dreams that details will be given at E3 about how I’ll be running, jumping and sliding all around rooftops and corridors as Faith again.

You gotta have faith.

For the small amount of time that I’m able to pull myself away from mad speculation on Mirror’s Edge 2, I have been looking forward to a killer DS line up from Nintendo. After a reveal at E3 last year there has been no news whatsoever regarding Golden Sun DS, so hopefully something is shown at E3. Also from Nintendo we have Pokemon Black and White. Hopefully we receive some more solid details on the game at E3 and of course there will be the big reveal of the 3DS which I am very much looking forward to.

Thirdly, I’m looking forward to what will appear on the Xbox 360. With no real reveals beyond Halo Reach, Gears of War 3 and Fable 3, they have played their hand close to their chest. In particular I’m hoping for a new IP or Conker sequel from Rare and hopefully a new in-house IP from Microsoft.

Finally, I want to see Team ICO announce an ICO and Shadow of the Colossus double pack for the PlayStation 3 as well as a solid date for The Last Guardian.

E3 2010 is shaping up to display much of the old, but not so much of the new. So far, the usual aurora of mystery surrounding the event has been notably absent. We know about the upcoming projects, including Project Natal and PlayStation Move, and many of the unreleased games that will be display, such as Gears of War 3 and Killzone 3. Come next week, I hope there will still be plenty of announcements to both shock and surprise. Here’s hoping for a new Rainbow Six or Syphon Filter, or even just a glimpse of Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

Undoubtedly, the big three will barrage us with their sales numbers and attach rates, make sly remarks about each other, continue with nonsensical celebrity endorsements and Peter Molyneux will get a little too excited about Fable 3. New hardware announcements will be confined to the portable arena, centred predominantly on the Nintendo 3DS. After the ruckus of previous years, it is doubtful Sony will debut a new PlayStation Portable.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo should mostly take the opportunity this year to solidify their current investments. A new appearance for Zelda is given, and the Xbox and PlayStation will be making the most of their new motion-sensing capabilities. The PlayStation Move perhaps has the most to prove, currently basking in the shadow of the Wii’s capabilities. Project Natal is showing the most promise, but for the device to succeed, developers and publishers need to show that can live up to the technology’s incredible potential.

If we can take anything away from E3 2010, it’s that the upcoming release calendar is looking strong. With titles like Deus Ex: Human Revelation, Vanquish, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Crysis 2 on the horizon, there’s still plenty to be excited about when it comes to video games.

E3 is essentially Clash of the Titans, except that it doesn't star Sam Worthington, only has partial 3D and it isn't rubbish. The big three companies of the industry smash against each others heads with their massive conferences and hope to win over the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere, and this is all done through fancy big name announcements, bombshells, and sales statistics; the last one obviously being the ultimate swaying stick.

Now apart from all the hoo-ha, the flexing and the undeniably good looking booth babes, I'm pretty much keen on seeing just a few key titles that have stood out to me over the past few years. The first is Killzone 3. The second instalment from last year blew my violent mind away with its frenetic and well-paced gunplay, and I was happy to see a shooter finally go back to that standardised way of gaming instead of trying to give you 500,000 perks and customisations to your left shoe. So now that I hear the third is on the way, with prettier visuals, refined gameplay, jetpacks and 3D, you can damn well bet I'm excited.

Second is another shooter, Crysis 2. I was a big, big fan of the original Crysis primarily because I take some sadistic kind of pleasure out of crippling my computer with impossibly detailed visuals, but then there was also the creative freedom that the Nanosuit gave you. Crytek seem to promise more of this in the sequel and I'm keen to see what they've done; albeit I worry whether the consoles have gimped the visuals (my PC elitism is boundless).

And finally, the most important one I'll keep simple: Give us a release on The Last Guardian and show us more. MORE.

E3 is certain to be flooded with blockbuster releases, but I'm a lot more interested in Fumito Ueda's new title; The Last Guardian. Information up to this point has been sparse to say the least, so a new trailer or maybe even a release date would go a long way towards keeping me happy. Outside of Metal Gear, this is why I bought a Playstation 3, so I have incredibly high hopes.

The more I look back at my gaming experiences in 2009, the more I realise how Arkham Asylum was such a beautifully crafted game. The announcement of a sequel came as no real surprise considering how commercially successful the original was, and now Rocksteady Studios has a chance to show their true calibre as one of the industry's best. All I want is a new trailer, is that too much to ask?

One more year back in time, 2008. A relatively small studio created a sleeper hit called Dead Space. Visceral Games managed to drag me through the single most atmospheric and brutal experience of my life, and now I want more. Naturally, Dead Space 2 made me giggle like a little girl in anticipation. In terms of sheer potential, Dead Space 2 could reinvent survival-horror. But please don't focus too much on multiplayer, please.

Last but not least, Cliff Bleszinski's love child, Gears of War 3. Everyone knows this is going to sell millions when it's released next year, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to see some in-game footage. There's not a single doubt in my mind; Gears 3 is going to be a great game. It's just a shame it took them four years to introduce four player co-op. Better late than never I suppose.

That’s all for today. Make sure to tune in tomorrow for the rest of the staff’s expectations in Part 2!

HELL YES TO A NEW SYPHON FILTER! Well, a GOOD Syphon Filter (like the PS1 ones <3) anyway. PS2 one(s) were pretty bad from what I played, and I never tried the PSP ones. But still, new Syphon Filter plz (it's not going to happen).

You guys covered pretty much everything I'm pumped for.

I'm most excited about the Nintendo conference though. More information on Pokemon Black and White, Golden Sun DS and the new Zelda are enough for me to be satisfied, but a few surprises would be nice too! Just what have Retro been working on since Corruption?

As for Sony, all I want is a confirmation on the existence of the Shadow of the Colossus and ICO Double Pack. I also want to know when The Last Guardian is coming! I would love to see a new Syphon Filter though. The two PSP games were awesome, so a bigger, sexier looking game for PS3 would be great.

Lastly, I'd also love to see some footage of Dead Space 2, Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the new Batman game and Final Fantasy XIII Versus!
