New SA Attorney-General announced

PALGN News | An R18+ rating supporter?
Following the resignation of former South Australian Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, on Sunday, successful Labor premier Michael Rann has announced the new Attorney-General. Former backbencher John Rau, a Member of Parliament since 2002, former practicing lawyer and advisor to the Hawke government, will replace Michael Atkinson as the Attorney-General of South Australia.

The question on our minds though, what is his stance on the R18+ rating? Well, according to Chris Pryor of the Games4Croydon party (via Twitter), when tweeting about John Rau, he is apparently "a supporter of the R18+ classification for games (and a nice guy to boot)".

Pryor had previously stated on Monday that "seeing the role of Attorney-General filled by someone other than Mr Atkinson was a primary founding goal of Gamers4Croydon".

"With less than 6 months to prepare, no political experience, and only a few thousand dollars funding, we have achieved that goal.

"Unfortunately there are never any guarantees in politics, but we have removed the largest impediment to classification reform."

The next meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General is held in Melbourne on April 29. Currently, it is unknown whether the introduction of an R18+ games rating will be discussed. However, you can help bring attention to this issue by signing an EveryonePlays petition at your local GAME store. And be sure to tell your friends and family about it:

It really would be a joke if the issue isn't raised at the Committee, particularly with the overwhelming public support seen in the discussion paper. Hopefully they can all vote positively and we can finally catch up to the rest of the developed world.

Despite the WA Attorney General (Christian Porter) being Liberal, he's quite young (relatively for a pollie) and I'm sure I read somewhere that the guy's actually a gamer himself.

Now, I hope I didn't dream that last part...

For them to properly do their job and go through all the submissions, there's no way it can be on the agenda for the next SCAG meeting given the timing of it. However, they do meet every 4 months.

Interestingly though, the meetings also involve the NZ Minister of Justice. Presumably so there can be some alignment between NZ/Aus on laws. So I'd imagine when the R18 debate comes to the table, if he's involved in that part, he'd be for it, given NZ already have it...

This is true, but Hulls position is under threat currently, since Labour are not doing great in Victoria and there is a state election in November. Still, inept as the Labour party is here, the liberals appear more inept, so he might just keep his position.
